Then review the Steps to Analyzing an Argument before completing the Practice Sequence: Analyzing Arguments”: Identify the type of claim. Is it a claim of fact? Value? Policy? Analyze the reasons used to support the claim. Are they recent? Relevant? Reliable? Accurate? Identify concessions. Is there another argument that even the author acknowledges is legitimate? Identify counterarguments. What arguments contradict or challenge the author’s position? A Practice Sequence: Analyzing an Argument Use the criteria in the “Steps to Analyzing an Argument” box to analyze the following blog post by Susan D. Blum. What types of claims does she advance (try to prove of convince us are true)? What makes you think so? What seems to be her main claim? Quote or paraphrase it. Cite the paragraph number it is in. Explain why do you think it is the main claim. Do you find her reasons recent, relevant, reliable, and accurat​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​e? Quote, paraphrase, or summarize examples of reasons or evidence in her essay that should be recent, relevant, reliable, and accurate. Cite the paragraph numbers to locate each one. Demonstrate why those reasons or evidence are or are not recent, relevant, reliable, and accurate. What sort of concessions does she make? Quote or paraphrase them. Cite their paragraph location. What indicates they are concessions? What counterarguments would you raise? Present and discuss points of view that are missing in her argument. Your answers don’t have to be written in an essay form, but they do have to be paragraphs. Post your answers first. After you post your answers, review and discuss the answers of classmates who posted different answers than you did.
