WST 291: Intro to Feminist Theory

Introduction: I want us to work on developing a short narrative on a given feminist thinker, a
corresponding social issue, and share it with your peers. I hope this helps spark creativity while
helping nurture your critical thinking skills.
Directions:
• You will be given a feminist thinker to narrativize via SBU email.
• You will do some research to learn key information about your given feminist thinker and
corresponding social issue that you identify on your own so that you can construct a
narrative about them:
o You are required to use at least 4 sources for your narrative.
o Although Wikipedia will not count as one of your 4 required sources, you may
start with Wikipedia to guide your search, but you must go to the resources they
provide on your historical feminist figure and corresponding social issue to narrow
your findings (and find your required 4 sources).
o Again, Wikipedia does not count as one of your required 4 sources. However, if you
do choose to use it as a starting point/guide, you still need to include it in your
References/Works Cited section following your body of work.
• Narrativization Do’s and Don’ts:
o Required Narrative Length:
▪ 400-600 words.
o Required Narrative Format:
▪ Must be an attachment:
• Do not construct your narrative nor copy/paste it into the body of
the Blackboard discussion thread you create.
• You may only attach docx, doc, PDF, or link to Google Doc.
▪ You may use PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, or Canva (not required).
• If you choose to use one of those, you may share the link to your
narrative in the body of the Blackboard discussion thread you create.
o Be creative
▪ This is not a simple biographical depiction. You are creating a story about
your given feminist thinker and corresponding social issue.
o Incorporate Factual Information
▪ Although you are creating a narrative about your given feminist thinker and
corresponding social issue, you are required to base all that you write on
factual information about said thinker that you will cite using MLA or APA
standards.
o Incorporate Images
▪ You are required to incorporate at least one image in your narrative. This
image could be a photo of your given thinker but does not have to be. Any
imagery you use has to support your story, so it can’t be a random image that
has nothing to do with your narrative.
o Include at Least One of Your Thinker’s Contributions
▪ Within your thinker’s narrative you need to share at least one of their major
contributions to the world. This needs to be a tangible contribution,
whether that is a publication, a piece of art, an activist organization, or
otherwise, you need to share at least one thing your given thinker has
contributed to the world and cite your resource.
Discussion Flow:
• You will post your narrative as a new thread by Thursday 7/14 by 11:59pm at the discussion
forum.
o Title your thread with your thinker’s name.
• You will respond to at least two of your peers’ threads by Sunday 7/17 by 11:59pm at the
discussion forum.
