Unit 4 Assignment: Compare and Contrast Essay
OVERVIEW:
 Students will compare and contrast the play and film of “King Lear” written by Shakespeare. In
this assignment the student will analyze the elements including the similarities and differences of
the play and film.
 The students are expected to have completed the play and the movie before starting this
assignment.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on the Learning Goals and Success Criteria.
Total 80 points.
Compare and Contrast Instruction and Process
The tragic play “King Lear” is focused on a king named Lear who decides to divide his kingdom between
his three daughters. Hoping to divide the properties of his kingdom and retire to live as a happy father
with his daughters. Little did he knew, two of his daughters were planning to take over his kingdom by
flattery and encouraging his ego. His actions end up destroying his family and tearing apart the kingdom
creating a tragic ending to the play.
Your task is to compare and contrast the play and film of “King Lear”, as well as creating ONE piece of
media text. The students are expected to have completed the play and the movie before starting this
assignment.
In your assignment, you must include all of the following:
1. Compare and Contrast Essay
 The students have to compare and contrast the text version of the play and the film of “King
Lear” by Shakespeare. To compare means to state the similarities, and to contrast means to state
the differences.
 This is a formal essay, therefore, it has to have five (5) proper essay paragraphs.
 Introduction (Thesis and three (3) supporting points)
 Three (3) Body Paragraphs that talk about each of the points stated in the introduction
 Conclusion need to restate the thesis and the important points from the body paragraphs.
 The student must discuss the following:
 The background of the story, which includes the events that happened.
 Description of the character’s personality, beliefs, motivations, etc. Choose a specific
character from the play and the movie
 Plot and structure of the events and actions developed in the story.
 Remember to give specific examples from the play or the movie.
 This assignment must be double spaced, using size 12 font (Arial or Times New Roman),
minimum of 500 words and a maximum 600 words.
2. Note-Taking Evidence
 The student must provide jot notes from the play and/or the movie.
3. Compare and Contrast Draft
 The student must provide a draft different from their final copy.
 The draft must show signs of revision and editing of grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and
sentence structure.
4. Glossary
 Include five (5) Shakespearean words or expressions that was used in “King Lear”.
 Write down what the words or expressions mean in modern English then make a sentence for
each of those words/expressions, total five (5) sentences.
5. Self-Learning Reflection and Presentation
 Student will write a self-reflection discussing variety of strategies and techniques learned
throughout the course of Eng4U. Your reflection must answer the following
questions/statements:
 Strategies and techniques you learned in this course.
 Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your reading, writing, oral communication, and
media interpretation.
 How each of the types of skills help your improve your English.
 In your reflection, provide a writing sample to reflect your growth as a writer. Also, provide a
short explanation why you choose that piece of writing.
 In your presentation, you are to present your self-learning reflection to the class. You must
include visual aids in your presentation.
 You may use a presentation script or cue cards during your presentation, but do not directly
read off your scripts.
 Your self-learning reflection will be handed in for marks, therefore, you do not have to hand
in your presentation script.
