Reading, Writing & Global Dialogue

Assignment:
For this paper, you will select one of the following readings to critically review:
– “Moving In” by Emma McKenna
– “Dark Matters” by Alicia Elliott
– “We Are All Migrants” by Mohsin Hamid
Your paper will critically engage with your chosen reading. In your writing, you will make use of a
mixture of analysis, interpretation and evaluation to answer the following three questions:
– What are the significant features of the text?
– What do these features mean?
– What is the value of the text?
This assignment calls for you to engage your critical thinking, reading and writing skills. You may briefly
summarize the article in question, but you must spend most of your paper analyzing, interpreting and
evaluating it.
Analysis:
– What are the patterns and features of the text?
– What is the overall argument?
– What examples does the author use?
– What rhetorical strategies does the author use (pathos, logos, ethos)?
Interpretation:
– What do the patterns and features of the text mean?
– What debates does the author engage with?
– What kind of perspective (historical, political, philosophical, psychological, scientific)?
– How might this text be biased?
Evaluation:
– How well does the text do what it does?
– What is the value of this text?
– What are the strengths and weaknesses of the text?
– How does this article compare to what others have said?
Evaluation of Assignment:
This critical review will be evaluated based on its ideas and writing style. I will be looking for a brief
summary of the article and demonstrated critical thinking, reading and writing. Your paper needs to
showcase a mixture of analysis, interpretation and evaluation when discussing the selected article. The
writing should be formal, engaging and free of errors.
Citations: This paper will require in-text citations and a works cited as you will be referencing at least
one article. Please use MLA style to format your citations.
Format: MLA style
Margins: One inch on all sides
Spacing: Double spaced throughout
Title: Centered, first letters of main words capitalized
Font: 12-point, preferably Times New Roman or Calibri
