2- Literary Analysis

Paper 4-1 is due at the beginning of class. You should focus on some theme present in the first half of Song Yet Sung. Write 3-5 pages and include a separate Works Cited page. Consider this the first draft of paper 4, which will be lengthened and rewritten when we have completed reading the novel. Be sure to stick with the same main idea/thesis in the final version, 4-2, which will be 4-6 pages.

Your essay should focus on the reading assignment, not on your personal experience. Please don’t use “I”. Try to avoid plot summary; we’ll all be doing the same reading. Use specific examples when possible. Make sure that the first paragraph introduces the main idea/thesis/argument of the paper and lists the specific points to be covered. The final paragraph should be a conclusion. Make sure you include the title of the work and the names of the author in the first paragraph.

Feel free to use quotes, but don’t let the quotes take over. A good rule of thumb is to allow quotes to take up no more than 20% of the paper. Quotes should be “introduced”; that means they should be part of your own sentence. An example would be: The narrator reveals that “………………..”(39). Be sure to analyze any quoted material. Don’t think that it speaks for itself.

All papers should be double spaced and be paginated. Use MLA format. You may refer to the handbook you got for English 101, use resources found at the HCC Library or online. Make sure your paper has a title (not just the title of the work) and includes your name, the date, and the course info.
