Research Paper Assignment
You will write a 2000 word documented essay based upon the material which we are covering in class. (I have listed the topics we discussed throughout the
semester at the bottom)
This essay will be an argumentative essay. All copies of work should be word-processed and double-spaced. The essay should bear one-inch margins, and it
should be submitted in 12 pt. Times new Roman font. Final copies should be carefully proofread and should follow MLA documentation style. You will use a
minimum of 5 scholarly sources. Internet sources are not acceptable. You may use online sources that end in .edu, .gov, or .org. Typographical, sentencelevel grammar, and stylistic errors will decrease your grade. Be sure to proofread your work; poor editing and proofreading compromise the integrity of your
essays, and your grade will be adjusted accordingly.
Research based assignments will use the MLA Documentation format (in-text citations, work cited page). Please note that any essay which does not
conform to the requirements outlined here will receive a failing grade.
Possible Research Topics: (You can choose any you think would be best) I have no preference.
Discuss symbols or motifs in a particular selection.
Select a literary theme and trace it through several works.
Examine the cultural and historical backgrounds which might have influenced a particular piece of literature.
Examine the depiction of the human condition in a particular literary work.
Consider the depictions of female characters in a particular literary work.
Read a variety of works and select one which you think would be interesting to write about and research.
