Final Paper
GUIDELINES/CHECKLIST
 Your final paper will be based on an (one) issue/topic that you believe was (is) critical in shaping the Black quest/struggle for justice and what is being done to address the issue (please feel free to discuss triumphs as well).

 You must choose from one of the following topics: racial equality or educational equity. These are the only topics that can be examined.

 Examine the issue from a historical and contemporary perspective. This is not a book report. Do not provide me with what would be considered an encyclopedia entry. You must succinctly state and analyze the information you are providing in your paper.

 Discuss why critical race theory is (or is not) the best framework for examining the issue. Look at the Scott readings. The readings show how issues can be examined form different sociological perspectives. If you have to conduct additional research on critical race theory, do so. It is important that your paper be factually accurate. Cite your reputable/legitimate/scholarly critical race theory source(s) in your paper. I will be looking for this.

 Further, discuss the present status or outcomes associated with this issue.

 Provide practical recommendations for moving forward based on your knowledge/research. If this issue has been addressed sufficiently, provide evidence of this and state the impact that policy or decisions have had on Blacks.

 Your paper must be organized in the order in which the bullets above appear!
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT Guidelines:
 Fully explain any assertions you make. It is critical to completely follow through on clearly articulating/supporting your thoughts.

 Include applicable theory(ies), concepts, or definitions (at minimum three—apply a BOLD attribute to them) discussed in class, videos, your assigned readings, etc. Be sure to use them in their proper context; do not just arbitrarily sprinkle them in your paper. You are not expected to merely restate what you have read/learned. You are fashioning a perspective based on what you have learned. Do not write a paper exclusively about facts (also do not embellish facts), as your paper should reflect your ability to synthesize and analyze what you have learned.
ALSO, ENSURE THAT ANY FACTS STATED ARE ACCURATE AND THAT THEY ARE NOT DISTORTED/MISREPRESENTED.

 This paper must be five complete pages (does not include your cover page and your References page). For this assignment you MUST cite sources. Use at least FOUR outside sources (outside of your assigned readings) and cite the sources in the body of your paper (parenthetically) and on your References page. Overall, if information comes from any source (quoted, paraphrased, re-phrased, summarized, etc.), the source must be cited (even if it is from your assigned readings. Failure to cite sources constitutes plagiarism. Wikipedia is not an acceptable source. Only use reputable or scholarly sources, such as your assigned readings, journal or magazine articles, books, etc. Note: you must cite documents CORRECTLY parenthetically in your paper and on your References page. Do not plagiarize by including someone else’s ideas/work verbatim. I will be able to detect this. Only directly quote material sparingly. Further, do not in any case cite information from my PowerPoint lecture notes (or me for the matter). You must conduct your own research!

 The typeface should be Times New Roman or Calibri; the margins should be (left and right) 1,” respectively, and 0.9,”respectively (top and bottom). The point size should be 12 and the paper should be double-spaced and not quadruple-spaced (only press the Enter key once between each paragraph; remember the first lines of paragraphs should be indented five spaces). It is not acceptable to miss class or to come to class late to submit (upload) this or any assignment. It is also not acceptable to leave class permanently for the evening after submitting (uploading) your paper.
