The Progressive Era was a turning point in U.S. history that led to the creation of a more powerful federal
government and the articulation of new visions of the American political community. We started off this
block of the course by discussing these competing visions among early progressives –cultural pluralism,
economic democracy, and white nationalist progressivism. While the latter was the “mainstream” variant in
the Progressive Era, these visions have risen and fallen in influence in relation to one another over the
twentieth century. Arguably, all of them exist to this day in some form (though modern white nationalists
tend to frame themselves as anti-progressive, one could take a different position and argue that some form
of progressivism attached to white nationalism persists today). In this paper, you will address the following:
Using the course material, explain how the influence of these competing visions of the American political
community rose and fell in relation to each other from the Progressive Era to today, tracing where you see
the influence of each one in the history we studied. Which vision(s), if any, do you think dominated
American politics the most over this period of time? Which vision(s), if any, do you think will dominate
American politics for the foreseeable future? (Note that this leaves room for you to say all, some, or none
