A Review on Digital Twins in Architectu and Construction

Title (suggested): A Review on Digital Twins in Architecture, Engineering and Construction: Current Trends, Knowledge Gaps, and Future Research
Reference style: IEEE
Description: The review paper should thoroughly address the recent, say the last 10 years of relevant literature on digital twin technology for projects in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. Regarding journal selection, a pool of 10 to 15 journals relevant to the topic should be included in the review, primarily from Web of Science, Scopus, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), The Institution of Civil Engineers databases (other relevant databases can also be included). Final selection of journals must be justified (e.g. journals sorted by CiteScore ranking, impact factor, etc.). Criteria for selecting articles should be based on keywords, examination of articles, relevance of the article, etc. A final pool of approximately 80 articles should be included and appropriately cited in the review. Regarding content analysis, it is suggested the following theme selection: (i) scale (component-level, structure-level, city-level), (ii) type of structure addressed (e.g. buildings, bridges, wind turbines, nuclear power plants, dams, etc.), (iii) stage of the project benefited (e.g. design, construction, operation, maintenance, demolition, etc.), (iv) type of study (e.g. theoretical, practical application, case study, discussion, technical note, etc.), (v) level of detail (LoD100, LoD200, LoD300, LoD350, LoD400, LoD500), etc. In addition, important institutional research efforts on Digital Twins should be included, such as the National Digital Twin Programme led by University of Cambridge and Centre of Digital Built Britain, among others.
The review should be aimed at answering the following research questions: What is understood by the term “Digital Twin” in the AEC industry?; How Digital Twins will take over from BIM technology in the AEC industry?; What is the status of academia in advancing Digital Twin technology?; What are the current research trends in Digital Twin technology being conducted in academia?; What are the knowledge gaps in the field? What aspects have not yet been addressed by researchers?; What are the future research lines to be conducted by academia in order to contribute by transferring technology to the AEC industry?; What countries have contributed most to the research status on Digital Twins?; What universities have contributed most to the research status on Digital Twins?.

At least, the following tables and figures need to be included (but not limited to):
1. Research design: A graph depicting the research design process should be included. An example of such a figure is shown as follows:

2. Evolution of published articles: A histogram showing the number of publications per year in the topic should be included. An example of such a figure is shown as follows:

3. Percentage of the selected articles published in each journal. An example of such a figure is shown as follows:

4. Top 10 Keywords with the strongest citation bursts. An example of such a figure is shown as follows:

5. Authors with most publications. An example of such a figure is shown as follows:

6. Additional figures that can contribute to the review will be positively assessed.
