2- President Inauguration

Create a 200-250 word thread that not only quotes the text that you’ve selected but also explains in at least 50 words the reason for your selecting it. For further direction, check out my example selection after the below directions.

First, review your annotations for President Jefferson’s speech, Washington’s letters, the Declaration or Independence or Constitution, Callender’s article, or Jordan’s statement.
Next, select text that intrigues, provokes, or confuses you (Consider selecting text that you would want to incorporate into your essay as evidence for a claim). Quote the entirety of the relevant text that you’ve selected. Introduce the quotation, attribute it to the appropriate source, and cite the page number.
Finally, explain why you’ve selected the text. Specify the exact phrase within the quotation that intrigues, provokes, or confuses you the most; and, explain why or how the phrase intrigues, provokes, or confuses you (For example, a phrase may interest you because you recognize its significance. A phrase may provoke laughter, tears, or rage from you. A phrase may confuse you because you don’t understand a definition or a cultural context).

For example:
In, “The Declaration of Independence,” Jefferson writes, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

This quotation intrigues me because it articulates rights as unalienable, which is a strange word that we don’t tend to use anymore. The truthfulness of these rights is evidence for itself. So, the unalienable right, however we interpret or understand it, is the basis of the American philosophy. It is the claim and evidence, together in one. The quotation provokes me because it refers to the endowment of our Creator, which is capitalized as if it’s proper, spiritual, or religious. Could we consider America to be a type of religious philosophy? Could we consider its founding documents to be religious texts, like the Torah, Quran, or Bible?
