You are allowed to use your textbook (as well as Gaiman’s story) and your notes, but other websites or outside sources are not allowed.
Students are not allowed to work together on tests.
If you use any direct quotations from the stories or class notes, you should include a signal phrase as well as quotation marks. (In-text citations with page numbers and Works Cited pages are not required on tests.)
Tests have a time limit of 2.5 hours from the time you begin the test until you will have to stop.
Material covered:

Test 1 covers all material from Module 1 and Module 2, including course Content and readings from the textbook.
Overall suggestions:

Since this is a timed test, I recommend starting by answering the questions that are worth the most points (Parts 4 and 3). That way, if you run out of time, you will have already completed the questions worth 30 and 20 points.
As explained below, you do not need to answer all of the questions in Parts 1 and 2, and it does not help you to answer all of them. Instead, choose the ones you feel most prepared to answer.
It should not be necessary to reread the stories as you study; instead, I would focus on studying specific aspects of the stories as explained below.
Part 1: Quote Interpretation (7 points each)

Learning Outcome:
Interpret the meaning of specific quotations and explain their importance in the text as a whole.
Pick any two of these questions to answer. (If you answer more than two questions, only the first two will be graded.)
You do not need to write in complete sentences for this section.
I recommend reviewing key quotations from each text, especially ones mentioned in the Analysis and Commentary documents and in the Discussion Boards.
Part 2: Elements of Fiction & Genres (12 points each)

Learning Outcomes:
Explain an author’s use of specific elements of fiction and evaluate their significance in the text.
Articulate differences between genres, providing examples from specific texts.
Pick any three of these questions to answer. (If you answer more than three questions, only the first three will be graded.)
You do need to write in complete sentences for this section. Your answer should be about a paragraph long.
I recommend reviewing all of the vocabulary terms from Modules 1 and 2 and making sure that you can apply them to specific texts. I also suggest reviewing the Background and Prereading Notes and the Analysis and Commentary documents, focusing on questions and points that apply elements of fiction and genres to the stories.
Part 3: Creative and Cultural Contexts (20 points)

Learning Outcomes:
Discuss how an author’s personal background and creativity shaped the creation of the text.
Describe how stories reflect the culture and values of the time and place they are created or set.
There is only one prompt; you will apply the prompt to two texts of your choice (one from Module 1 and one from Module 2).
You do need to write in complete sentences for this section. Your answer should be about 2-3 paragraphs long.
I suggest reviewing the information about the authors and time periods in the Background and Prereading Notes as well as the textbook’s context about each author. I also suggest reviewing the Analysis and Commentary documents, focusing on questions and points that discuss the author’s personal background or the context or setting of the text.
Part 4: Literary Analysis (30 points)

Learning Outcomes:
Analyze specific texts on a common theme, comparing and contrasting their incorporation of specific elements of fiction.
Support interpretations with evidence, using quotation marks for any direct quotations.
You do need to write in complete sentences for this section. Your answer should be about 2-3 paragraphs long.
