Reflection #2

• After viewing the film, No Place Called Home write a two-page reflection describing your reaction(s) to the film, as well as its sociological implications. This means your paper should be written using sociological terms and concepts. The thrust of your paper should be centered around the following question. How does the film incorporate concepts you’ve learned about in this lesson pertaining to economic inequality?
Consider the following questions: (I’m not expecting you to literally answer these questions, but let them guide you in your thinking as you write your response.)
• What is the meaning of the title?
• What social structures contribute to the family’s situation?
• How does gender play a role in poverty?
• How does language and culture play a role in the film?
• Can the family in the film live off the minimum wage in Canada?
• How does the film incorporate concepts you learned about in this lesson?
• What government or economic changes would help the family in the film?
• In what ways did the film make you think about the current state of the economy and available social programs?
• Did anything surprise you?

Grading: See rubric below. You will be graded on your understanding of the material being presented in the reading and film as well being able to appropriately apply to it. Thus, your answers (journal) should display both knowledge and comprehension of the text and topic. In other words, I’m expecting that you have closely read/watched the text and put some thought into the question and your responses. Also, make sure to include details from the text to support your answers. Finally, make sure to edit your journals for grammar, spelling and style errors.
As a side note, I want to clarify that when I use the term “text” I am referring to both written (the chapter) as well as cultural texts (films).
