Children’s Mental Health

I did my visualization data on Children’s Mental health in the United States.

Children’s mental health in the United States is a growing topic that has received increased attention in recent years. One in every six children in the United States has a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Anxiety, depression, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are examples of such illnesses.

The Statics I gathered from the data were as follows:

· ADHAD 6 million

· Anxiety 5.8 million

· Behavior problems 5.5 million

· Depression 2.7 million

Most common in the age range 3-17 in 2016; however, between 2018-2019 drastic increase in depression and anxiety in children ages 6-17.

We also see a significant increase in adolescents ages 12-17 reporting substance use and suicide.

Mental health treatment rates differ among ages 3-17, resulting in the following:

· 8 in 10 children, about 78%, receive depression treatment.

· 6 in 10 children, about 59%, receive anxiety treatment.

· More than 5 in 10 children, about 55%, receive behavior disorder treatment.

1 in 6 children, about 17% ages 2-8, were diagnosed with mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders.

In ages 2-8, boys were more likely to present with mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders.

1 in 5 children, about 100% living in poverty, presented with mental, behavioral, or developmental disorders.

I jotted down these numbers and categories to make it easier to transfer the data into an Excel document. The learning activity video the professor suggested helped me construct the two graphs I did. It was easy to follow and extremely helpful, and I recommend everyone collect their data and follow along with the video.
