Notes to Learners
 Your initial submission must include BOTH assignments. If one or more
assignments are referred, you can re-submit these on an individual basis, but
not in the first instance.
 Each assignment should consist of 1,500 words. You must clearly show the
number of words used (excluding appendices, diagrams etc).
 The questions are designed to test your understanding both of the principles
involved and their application.
 The answer should be relevant and concise.
 Examples are always welcome and, if specifically asked for, they must be
included.
 Each assignment is marked out of 100, with a 50% pass mark.
 Assignments should be stapled in the top left hand corner.
 Each assignment should be submitted with a separate cover sheet, found at
Appendix A.
 Style: You should use font 12 point Arial, 1.5 spaced, standard margins.
 Referencing: Your work must be referenced and there are a number of
referencing systems but the Harvard system is recommended. Harvard:
author and date appear in the text and in the references at the end of your
work in alphabetical order of author’s surnames. Do not keep web references
separate and do include the date accessed. Do not put references in
footnotes.
 Remember, you are aiming for accuracy and consistency.

Assignment 1
You are the Transport Manager of a large multi-modal freight organisation and have
been asked by your Managing Director (MD) to produce a paper that the MD intends
to deliver to the Board.
In particular, it must specifically explain the principle similarities and differences
between the Rail and Air modes when moving freight consignments.
In addition, the MD has requested that you include in your comparisons an
assessment of the environmental impact of Rail and Air freight movements, typical
operational problems both of these modes face, and their ability to manage, in cases
of fluctuation in demand.
Assignment 2
The Managing Director has now presented your paper (from Assignment One) and
the Board is now interested in alternatives to Rail and Air movements.
Firstly, the Board has asked for clarification of what Strategic and Tactical level
planning may be necessary in order to construct and open a new Road-Sea intermodal hub and what impact ISO containers have had in reducing delays for freight
in-transit.
The MD has asked you to write another paper addressing these questions.
