This assignment will serve as a rough draft of the Research Methods section of your final research proposal due at the end of the semester. This assignment
will be graded on a 100 point scale and is worth 20% of your final grade.
I expect your assignments to follow General Formatting Requirements for Written Assignments, which include page numbering, 1” margins, strict doublespacing, and Times New Roman 12pt. Font. All assignments must be written in formal English, with college-level writing mechanics, and APA-style
formatting, inclusive of in-text citations and references.
Written assignments must be submitted to Canvas unless otherwise noted by the instructor. Students are 100% responsible for uploading the correct file
when submitting an assignment. Failure to upload the correct file will result in a zero or an incomplete for the assignment depending on the grading
structure.
Instructions: You may format this assignment however you choose: you can write it as a multi-paragraph essay or you can address each question separately.
Whichever formatting choice you make, you must address each question of the prompt and provide thorough, clear, well-written answers.
Part 1: Research Question (25 points)
Restate your research topic and research question from Assignment #1. If you received feedback on Assignment #1 about how to improve your research
question, you must incorporate this feedback to receive full credit.
Part 2: Data Collection Plan (75 points)
Discuss your data collection plan. For each method you plan to use in your proposed research, address the following questions. Be sure to draw a clear
connection between your research question and proposed research methods. How will these methods help to answer your question?
Be as detailed as possible. Identify specific locations for your proposed field sites. Walk me through your exact plans to gain access or recruit interview
participants. Discuss specific actions you will observe or interview questions you will ask. Identify specific primary source documents you will examine and
where you will find them.
Your total response should be between 500-1,000 words:
Ethnography
Where will you conduct observations? Why did you choose this field site? How will it help you answer your research question?
What is your plan to gain access?
What behaviors, practices, and interactions will you observe? Why will these be your focus? How will it help you answer your research question?
How will you balance participation versus observation?
How long do you plan to be in the field?
Interviews
Who will you interview? Why did you choose this group to interview? How will it help you answer your research question?
How will you recruit study participants?
What questions will you ask? Provide examples of at least 5 interview questions
Content Analysis
What kinds of primary source documents will you analyze (e.g. print news media, TV news, art, film, TV, pop culture, social media, etc.)? Why did you choose
these primary source documents? How will it help you answer your research question?
What period of time will your sample focus on? Why did you choose this time period? How will it help you answer your research question?
Where will you find these primary source documents?
