Formulate a personal philosophy regarding multicultural education. 2. Critique factors of race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, gender, and social class and how they affect and inform individual attitudes, perspectives, teaching practices, and learning experiences. 3. Assess intercultural dynamics in self, schools, and society, and how these are informed by personal and institutional oppressions. 4. Examine the importance of perceptions of self as cultural/ethnic “actors” or “helpers” who live and work with clients in a culturally and ethnically shaped society, and with that perception/knowledge be better able to respond to their clients’ needs, strengths and learning styles (particularly those which are influenced by ethnicity and culture). 5. Evaluate the assertion that some portion of classroom, school, hospital, or institutional behavior is in large measure shaped by a combination of forces originating outside the school, classroom, etc. You will develop a portfolio that will represent your personal philosophy regarding multicultural education to include the examination and evaluation of factors that affect and inform dynamics, perceptions, attitudes, perspectives, and pedagogical practices. This portfolio will include the following three written and labeled sections: 1. Personal Philosophy – a comprehensive philosophy describing your understanding of and approach to multicultural education (3 page minimum). 2. Critique of Relevant Factors – This includes an examination and discussion of at least 4 of your own personal factors, (i.e. race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, g​‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍​ender, social class, etc.) and how they shape and affect your personal attitudes and perspectives. This discussion should also include a detailed response illustrating an examination of your service as a role model in a diverse educational system (4 pages minimum). 3. Personal and Institutional Oppressions – a discussion of the personal and institutional oppressions that exist at the level of the school, the community, and the society. Define and describe at least four separate oppressions (two personal and two institutional) that exist in your setting. Explain how these oppressions affect the pedagogical process at all institutional levels (4 pages minimum). Each of the above-described sections must include the following: 1. The information described in the above instructions. 2. At least two artifacts or samples that illustrate the information or knowledge that you are providing. (You may not use the same artifact/sample in more than one section.) Possible artifacts include, but are not limited to, summaries of relevant articles, sample IEP goals and objectives, medical literature, case studies, assessment protocol, intervention plans, and testimonials or interviews with administrators, students, or parents. Diversify your artifacts within each section; but most importantly, be creative! 3. Each section must be presented in APA 7th edition format and include at least three peer reviewed journal articles (primary sources only) and/or legal reports/documents. The textbook for this course may not be used as a reference. Your portfolio must be submitted in one complete and comprehensive document with distinct and labeled sections.
