Final Paper Overview
Over the course of the semester, you will research and write an approximately 4000-4500-word
essay on how a popular text from the past (e.g., book/book series, movie/movie series, TV series)
would or would not change if the characters had one or more of today’s mobile communication
technologies (e.g., smartphone, Apple Watch, Snapchat). For example, imagine if Romeo and
Juliet had smartphones? You would write a paper citing relevant academic research on mobile
phones, apps, and devices as evidence for how the story of Romeo and Juliet might be altered.
You would also use your discussion about Romeo and Juliet to make a bigger point about mobile
communication. In your paper, your argument will be based on evidence from published social
scientific research in peer-reviewed journals, and your essay will reflect mastery over a topic of
your choosing regarding mobile communication and its relationship to society, culture, and/or
politics. Think of this paper as a mix between a communication studies literature review and an
English or film class paper. In preparation for the final paper, you will turn in 2 shorter written
assignments—a proposal and an annotated bibliography. For each assignment, anonymized
samples from students in prior classes have been posted to Canvas.
Current Assignment
• A proposal (25 points), consisting of a paragraph and preliminary bibliography (250-300
words) that specifies:
o Your chosen media text
o Your chosen mobile communication technology/s
o Why you think this technology/s would or would not significantly alter the text
o The names of three academic journals you will target in order to find relevant
research articles about your topic.
o A preliminary bibliography (not included in the 250-300 words) of at least two
academic articles (from journals different than above) you plan to include in
your annotated bibliography. These cannot be readings assigned in class (though
you may include assigned readings later on in your annotated bibliographies).
Future Assignments
• An annotated bibliography (75 points, due March 10) that provides an overview of the
relevance, accuracy, and quality of 10 key scholarly sources on your chosen topic. You
will write a descriptive and evaluative paragraph of approximately 150-200 words per
source.
• A full paper (150 points, due May 2) of approximately 4000-4500 words with at least 15
scholarly sources.

Tips
• In order to identify academic journals (and find relevant articles), you will need to start by
doing a preliminary literature search. We will review how to find and evaluate high quality
research literature in class. I’m also more than happy to make suggestions if you make an
office hours appointment with me.
• The more literature you read (or the lack of literature you find), the more likely you will
make small adjustments to the scope of your topic. This is a good thing to do early on
because it also allows you to make more targeted recommendations in your final paper.

Technical Requirements
1. The body of your proposal (not including the bibliography) should be 250-300 words long.
2. The bibliography should be in APA 7
th Edition formatting.
3. The paper should be in the format of a Microsoft Word file, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1
inch margins.
Content Requirements
1. Identifies your text, the mobile technology/s on which you plan to focus, why you think this
technology/s would/would not significantly alter the text, and a clear argument that can be
supported with evidence.
2. Proposes at least three (3) high-quality scholarly journals for finding research articles that are
coherently related and connected to your chosen topic.
3. Includes a bibliography of at least two (2) relevant articles from peer-reviewed academic
journals (from journals other than the 3 mentioned above).
Your final paper proposal will be evaluated as follows:
25-23 points The proposal fulfills all of the technical and content requirements, has no
spelling errors, no egregious grammatical errors, and is well organized and
clearly written.
22-20 points The work fulfills all or most of the technical and content requirements, has
some spelling and grammar errors, and/or issues with organization and
clarity.
19-17 points The work only fulfills a few of the technical and content requirements, has a
number of spelling and grammar errors, and significant issues with
organization and clarity.
0 points The work fulfills none of the technical and content requirements.
