ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVE

The objective of this assignment is for you to demonstrate your comprehension of cinematography using examples from a specific film. Specific areas to be examined are “Implied Proximity,” “Camera Movement,” “Omniscient Point of View,” and “Character Point of View” as they relate to filming, cinematography and the camera.

BEFORE WATCHING THE FILM…

Read the chapter on cinematography.
Review the PowerPoints on cinematography in this module.

Read a synopsis of the film on IMDb (Links to an external site.) , Wikipedia (Links to an external site.) , Fandom (Links to an external site.) , or other site.
Review the questions below so you know what to take notes on while watching the film.
NOTE: It is VERY important for you to know the meaning of “Implied Proximity,” “Camera Movement,” and the differences between “Omniscient Point of View,” and “Character Point of View” as they relate to filming and the CAMERA.

INSTRUCTIONS

Carefully and thoroughly read and understand each question.
Answer each of question USING DIFFERENT, SPECIFIC AND DETAILED EXAMPLES FROM THE FILM TO SUPPORT YOUR ANSWERS.
Each answer must be a well written paragraph of at least 150 words.
Include a word count after each answer.
Include timestamp where your example occurred in the film for each answer.
Your completed report must be double-spaced paper with your name, date and course name in the top left.

Proof your answers for spelling, punctuation, grammar, and clarity.

QUESTIONS:

Question 1: Discuss a specific sequence in the film where the implied proximity (see textbook pages 204-205) changes. Identify the shot types (see pages 205-207 in the textbook). Include what you think is the significance as described in the textbook of these shots and the proximity change. (Include timestamp where your example occurred and word count; minimum 150 words)

Question 2: Using a difference sequence, describe an example of camera movement – be specific in identifying the movement (see pages 211-218 in the textbook). What do you think was the purpose of moving the camera in this sequence? NOTE: Camera movement is NOT the same as editing or actor blocking/movement. (Include timestamp where your example occurred and word count; minimum 150 words)

Question 3: Using two different shots, explain the difference between omniscient point of view and character point of view (textbook pages 222-223). Be specific in explaining your selections and do not repeat shots from questions 1 and 2 for your answer. (Include timestamp where your example occurred and word count; minimum 150 words)
