Literature Review
The literature review enlarges knowledge and increases awareness of theories and facts on a
research subject: its purpose is to find out what is already known about the subject.
This workshop is designed to help you articulate your literature review part customized to your
research topic.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
▪ Develop your ability to scan literature efficiently and to identify a set of useful articles and
books to develop your research.
▪ Improve your critical appraisal to analyze data and apply learning to your research and
design
PROCESS
1-Write down the Title of your Research:
Multi-family housing in the Middle East
2- Introduction: (15 minutes)
State your research problem. Write a narrative describing what has led you to be interested in
this problem. Define the objectives in view and explain the limits within which you are studying
the problem (place, period use, etc.). Describe the main relationships and inclusions – or
exclusions if any.
The research will discuss about how to solve a problem for multi-family housing in the
Middle East. The middle eastern families tend to live together, which can cause lack of privacy and
having lots of noise in their house. These issues should be solved before constructing the house.
Sitting and discussing the flow and distribution is important for having a house that can fulfill your
needs such as privacy, noise reduction and sense of space.
3. Background: (15 minutes each)
• Describe the topic that you are concerned with, how did you notice it, why do you think
it is a subject which should be studied and how this research can be a contribution to
the architectural field.
Living in a house with many people with you can sometimes be disturbing due to no
privacy. Many family members can be bothered by having little privacy and can easily be
annoyed by the amount of noise the house has. It can have an impact on the person’s health
cause them to have a lot of stress and get no rest when needed. This research will help to give
solutions to have a house that is well distributed before construction.

paragraph)
The research will discuss the importance of having multi-family living together with putting
into consideration the privacy and noise reduction in the building.
• Study the history of the research project type including the current state and the
expected future development (Use at least 1 reference from literature with In-text or
end-text citation in the paragraphs.
In the past, families in the Middle East used to live in mud houses. These type of
houses was constructed very fast and have no insulation systems due to lack of materials.
Nowadays many families in the Middle East still live together with senior residents and
young children. And having big age differences can cause discomfort in the house.
However, for the future, the houses will be designed to have more privacy for these
certain type of families. And can have more privacy and enjoy those quiet.
