CIS-325 Decision Support Systems
Spring 2022
Course Project
The main purpose of this project is to give you a chance to explore decision support systems topics or
tools that we did not cover in class and to let other students learn from you. Your project must be related
to the course topics. The project can be individual or in groups of two. This project will count for 20% of
your final grade.
This project has three submission components listed in the table below:

1 Project Proposal:
You need to submit one page that includes team
members, project idea, and short description of your
project that includes what you want to achieve.
You can use the Course Communications forum in the
course shell to communicate with other students to
find a partner to work with.

2 Project Progress Report:
You need to submit a progress report that includes a
complete structure of your final report, introduction
that includes motivation, and other selected sections.
This report should have at least 50% of the final
report content.

3 Final Project Report and Presentation:
You need to submit the final report and a 10-minute
presentation with voiceover or video of your project.
Your presentation or video will be posted on D2L

Your project can be one of the project types described in the next table. The report requirements of each
type are also in the table. The report page limits are based on 11-point font size and single-space text.
This includes all figures and references.

Requirements
1 A decision support system proposal:
You will prepare a proposal for a specific organization or business (could be your
work place or any organization or business type you have some knowledge
about). Your main task is to prepare a proposal for that organization or business
to use a decision support system to improve operations, competitiveness,
profitability, etc. of the organization. You need to include the current
challenges, what type of decision support system that you will propose to solve
these challenges, what are the main components of the proposed system, what
are the main input and output for that system, what are the possible issues in
implementing and deployment of that system, and what are the benefits of this
system for the organization or business.

2 A decision support system research paper:
You will prepare a research paper that summarizes a current research topic
and/or development efforts on decision support systems for a specific field. This
can be a research paper on decision support systems for healthcare, smart
manufacturing, traffic control, energy management, smart cities, finance and
management applications, and logistics. You need to start by defining the
sources of information. You need to have at least 5 references. You can discuss
challenges, opportunities, approaches, and systems of providing decision
support for the selected field.

3 A comparison study between two or more tools or systems for decision
support:
You will prepare a study that compares two or more tools or systems available
for decision support. You can compare them in terms of features, flexibility, time
to learn, time needed to use them for building an application, difficulty,
openness, their popularity, etc. Your study must be based on building/using the
tools/systems for the same application. You need to provide screenshots for
using these tools/systems in your report.

4 A decision support system implementation:
You will build a small decision support tool or system for a specific application.
You can use different available open-source tools for your implementation.
Examples of such implementation can be:
• Using Java, Python, or R through integration with Weka to build a
decision tool or system.
• Building some macros using Microsoft Virtual Basic for Excel to support
decision making.
• Building a decision support system using MiniZinc
