Homework 1 (based on data visualization image attached below.)
The purpose of this assignment is to get you into a scientific information and data visualization mindset. This exercise is like a warm-up for your mind and
for the course.
Part 1: Review and assess the following visualization
Based on your review of the following data visualization about scientific information collected about exoplanets, write a few sentences (3-5) addressing each
of the three prompts below.
To help get you started I provided examples of topics for each segment. For this exercise, write based only on your reactions and impressions with the
graphic as is. You do not need to do additional research or provide citations in your response.
a. Describe the content represented by the visualization. (Ideas to consider: what the graphic is about, what is the visualization trying to demonstrate,
describe which data represented such as which variables, how many, what data types and scales)
b. Describe the visualization. (Ideas to consider: what type of graph is displayed, how does it represent multi-dimensional data, describe the design and
layout, what type of tool may have been used to make it)
c. Assess the effectiveness of the graphic overall. (Ideas to consider: what is the purpose of the graphic, who is the intended audience, what new insights are
revealed, what works well in this visualization, what could be improved, is there a better way to represent the same information such as in a different type of
graph or modifying how it appears)
