Coaching and Mentoring Skills for Success

There is some useful work here, but some cutting and refocusing is needed to produce a successful final paper. Focus on answering the right questions.
Part 1:
What the assignment requires from you.
Definition of coaching/mentoring
(About 20% of Part 1)

Range of perspectives concerning definitions

Understanding shown of what coaching/mentoring is and what it is not
Satisfactory.

There are more perspectives to consider e.g. what the course materials say, and e.g. https://karenwise.wordpress.com/2010/05/20/what-is-coaching-10-definitions/

If you have space, consider how coaching/mentoring are different to training, education, instruction, on-the-job learning, counselling, and therapy. For example, from this chapter:

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/268036606_Solution_Focused_Coaching_in_Practice

I say, ‘If you have space.’ Don’t spend too many words on this section. Compress what you have written. Keep it brief, focused, and avoid unnecessary words. The ‘meat’ of the first part of the paper should be in the following discussion about the value of coaching/mentoring to the individual.

Examination of the research evidence about the value of coaching/mentoring to the individual
(About 80% of Part 1)

Range of research sources used to examine the arguments about value

Sources about value have been critically examined – compared, evaluated, integrated
You don’t need to discuss processes and models, that is not what is asked for.

Build on your section 5. Look at more of the research in the RKC Emerald database of articles. Here are some example articles you can find there:

Does coaching work? A meta-analysis on the effects of coaching on individual level outcomes in an organizational context
Authors: Theeboom, T., Beersma, B., and van Vianen, A.E.M.

The effectiveness of workplace coaching: a meta-analysis of learning and performance outcomes from coaching
Authors: Jones, Rebecca J., Woods, Stephen A., and Guillaume, Yves R.F.

Coaching as a developmental intervention in organisations: A systematic review of its effectiveness and the mechanisms underlying it.
Authors: Grover, S. and Furnham, A.

Is executive coaching more effective than other management training and development methods?
Authors: Rekalde, I., Landeta, J., Albizu, E., and Fernandez-Ferrin, P.

Who sees change after leadership coaching? An analysis of impact by rater level and self-other alignment on multi-source feedback
Author: MacKie, D.

You should find more articles like this which examine the value of coaching to the individual. For example, http://ijbesar.teiemt.gr/docs/volume9_issue2/added_value_of_coaching.pdf And here is a very useful journal with plenty of articles:

https://radar.brookes.ac.uk/radar/items/28b6f25c-a860-4932-8fee-bd9b71bb950c/1/

And here is a useful website: https://booksc.org/s/coaching%20benefits

Also, make use of research done by coaching organisations and other professional organisations such as CIPD, ICF, etc.

When choosing your sources, evaluate them. What is the quality of the evidence they provide? Some sources are more significant than others, some are seminal papers that advanced the thinking of later researchers and get referenced a lot. So be selective.

The discussion about the value of coaching to the individual should be about 80% of the first part of the assignment. So cut out anything that is not relevant.

At the end of the day, the aim of this part of the paper is for you to examine the evidence. And, assuming the evidence is positive, to make a strong concluding statement that would convince a sceptical manager to invest in coaching.
Referencing, Presentation
Good.
Other You write well, so keep the writing style. But look at which words are unnecessary.

The rest of this feedback is the same for all students.
Part2: the assignment requirement – Provide a link to an uploaded 30 minute video/audio recording of you coaching someone, with accompanying written reflection on your own development as a coach/mentor using examples from this and other moments of your own practice. The reflection should be underpinned with a range of literature including that around coaching skills development and techniques. (3000 words + recording)
Key words:
– Reflection on your own development as a coach/mentor – we want to see evidence of you being consciously competent, trying new things, identifying weaknesses from the incidents you are involved in, and taking concrete and focused steps for your development.
– Reflection should be underpinned with a range of literature – you must discuss your coaching and development as a coach with reference to the literature.
An example that shows both development and the use of literature: “I wanted to try XYZ in a session. Whitmore (2010) suggests that XYZ is valuable because…… After the initial contracting process for the session, I said to the client… the client responded…. I concluded from this that I needed to develop the skills of A, B and C to make XYZ work effectively. Whitmore’s suggestion seems to be easier said in theory than in practice. I therefore practised A, B and C, and in another session I was able to……”
Be clear, we are not as interested in hearing about the client and their development, we are more interested in your process of coaching, your use of techniques, questions, coaching frameworks, body language, etc., and of your development in these. That said, one key measure of success as a coach is the client’s development, so you use the impact of what you do/not do, say/not say on the client as evidence of your effectiveness.
The examples that you reflect on:
– Must be specific detailed incidents. I strongly suggest you keep a ‘diary’ of incidents, and write them up soon after they happen.
– Incidents can be a mix of incidents in the recordings you made specifically for this assignment, and other incidents outside.
– You should use a reflection framework to systematise your reflections.
– You should aim to get objective feedback from others, to validate your self-reflections.
I have given you some links in the discussion forum on reflective writing.

Finally, tidying up the whole assignment:
Abstract – write this when you have finished the whole paper. Check online how to write an Abstract as it has a specific purpose and format.
Reference list – check that it matches with the in-text references that you use.
Check your Turnitin score – if it is under 25%, OK, but anything over 25% needs careful examination. You should avoid using long quotes, one reason for a high score; you should paraphrase most long quotes into your own words, which in any case shows better that you understand what they are saying.
