For this week, kind of a stand down and catch-up week for everyone. Still, it is getting to be that time where we need to think about the end of the semester
final project.
Your final Project will be a case study. Here is a list of criteria your case study must meet.
Case study must be from a completed NTSB investigation.
Does not have to be aviation, but any other modes of transportation that the NTSB investigates.
If your case study is not from Aviation, be prepared to take lessons learned and apply to aviation.
If your case study is from aviation, be prepared to apply those lessons to another mode of transportation.
Your case study shall not have received large media attention.
Edit in response to questions emailed in. I am trying to give my thought process on the following assignments.
This is a building block set of assignments. Here is a quick story on how I arrived at this assignment.
I have a current student and now dear friend of mine. Years ago, we met in my role as chief instructor and he as a student wishing to start and complete his
Flight Instructor training, and I became his instructor. He is in aviation as a hobby, but railroading is his professional life. At the time, he did not know that I
was a huge nerd for railroads, and I considered studying the railroads my hobby. Over the course of his training, we got to know each other better and he
became aware of my airline industry experience. He was really interested in in the life of an airline pilot. Many of you now must be aware of my ability to tell
stories endlessly, so is true in person with CFI applicants. To keep this story short, we started comparing our professional experiences across two different
industries, and we were both seeing things that the other was doing that we wish we could implement. My dear friend in the railroad started taking positions
in the labor union leadership positions, and I have tried to get my students to branch out into the other industries to take their lessons learned here and see if
there are perspectives to be made elsewhere. Thus, the part of the assignment where you investigate the accident you have chose and relate it or lessons
learned to another mode of transportation. I am trying to recreate or simulate the experience that I had with my CFI Applicant.
Refer to that one question test that I put up, where you selected your accident case number. That will be the meat and potatoes of what you need to know
there, but I will try to simplify it here.
Take your accident case study and read and digest it. Write about the issues in your case study that make it stand out to you. Write about the accident in the
spirit of how we have been doing our assignments this whole semester. You will know what stands out to you, what is significant, and anything else you wish.
Remember when you work on your final project, consider your audience. In this case it is going to be me, but I have no idea what accident you have selected,
so you cannot assume any of my prior knowledge to your case. Once you get through all of that, then remember to relate the lessons learned and apply them
to another mode of transportation.
Part 1 is just your outline that you will construct your final paper out of. It has a link posted in there for the APA level headings if you are a bit uncomfortable
with that skill set. The APA level headings do a couple of things. It forces you to create a guide for yourself to navigate all the material that you need and
want to cover. It will also keep your mind from veering off topic too much. When the final paper is complete, it will allow your audience (me) easy entry and
exit to your paper. It provides your reader with easy stopping points and an easy locator to jump back in. It will be your contribution to increasing the retention
and comprehension of the information that you write and share. It really is a wonderful skill. While there are five levels of heading in APA, it is your judgement
on how many you use.
Part 2:
This is your rough draft of the paper. It will include all the Standard APA elements that are specified in the Course information link, your APA level Headings
from the outline assignment, and all the text of your paper. I did not specify a word count. With no insult intended, but word counts in assignment instructions
are like training wheels. I know it can be uncomfortable to write without you knowing what my expectation is. You will write this paper for you, and I want you
to write until you are done. I know that last two sentences do not help either but do an honest and true job with your accident report, and it will likely be
correct.
Part 3:
Final Draft. This is the assignment that will implement any revisions required to the rough draft. Believe it or not, you guys as grad students do not often do
too much work on the final draft. Wait until you have received my instructor feedback on the second part before you submit your final draft.
