ELET 4351/6351: Biomedical Data Mining
RESEARCH PAPER AND CLASS PRESENTATION
ELET 4350 (Undergraduates): Complete project in teams of two.
ELET 6350 (Graduates): Each student will complete the project individually.
The research project, which accounts for 40% of the final grade, involves:
(3) A 10 minute oral presentation + 2 min Q&A in class
• ELET 6350 : Presentation + Q&A (12%).
• ELET 4350 : Presentation + Q&A (7%) + Team Work (5%)
(4) a formal write-up of 6-8 pages (20%)
Tentatively, class presentations will be held on Tuesday, April 26th.
Written reports will be due May 3rd at 11:59 pm.
PAPER:
Write an review of the literature on a topic of your choice in biomedical data mining and machine learning to
summarize, analyze, and critique the state of the art about the topic you chose. Feel free to choose a topic from
the various areas in biomedical data mining covered in the course.
Here is a guideline on how to write your paper:
1. Select a topic of interest relevant to the field of biomedical data mining.
2. Next, it is important that to hone down a research question within the topic, such that the focus of your
paper is to answer this question. This can also guide your search for articles.
3. Select a minimum of 3 research articles on the topic/research question from scholarly journals.
• At least two of articles you select must involve a research study (i.e. do not pick a review
article).
• The third article can be a research article or a review article.
• All 3 articles published have to be published within the last 5 years (post-2015).
4. Read the articles and write your paper. Your paper should contain the following sections:
a. Introduction: This section should clearly define your topic/research question, and why or how it
is important. The research question you picked is the subject matter of your paper, and the
articles you picked should support your question.
b. Background: This section should contain the literature review, i.e. a summary of how your
research articles support the theme of your paper, i.e. the research question. It is important that
you consider both supportive and any opposing views related to the topic/research question.
Below are some guidelines on how to conduct a literature review:

c. Analysis: In this section, you need to provide a critical analysis of your findings. Identify any
important results/conclusions from the papers and state your opinion on whether you
agree/disagree with the findings and why? Are there any findings from the articles that you
review that are still unclear and need additional research and why? It is important that your
analysis is built on evidence from the articles you selected for the literature review.
d. Conclusions: Write a concluding section that summarizes/answers your research question. Was
your research completely answered by the research articles you selected or are there any
questions that still require further clarification? Discuss your opinion on the current state of the
topic and whether there is any future for widespread clinical/practical implementation.
