Novata is a public benefit corporation backed by some of the world’s leading foundations and private sector companies. Novata empowers general partners
and private companies to collect, analyze, benchmark and report relevant ESG data. We are excited about our mission to work with the private markets to
achieve a more sustainable and inclusive form of capitalism.
ESG Methodology Research Associate Role
The ESG Methodology Role will work on three topics: (1) Support the development of ESG metrics and guidance, and enhance Novata’s metric library, (2)
Research and keep abreast of recent ESG developments, this includes standards developments, regulatory changes, and best practices, and (3) Assist the
Sales and Customer Success teams with specific ESG-related questions posed by our end-users and clients.
A key element of this role will be to support users collecting ESG data. The purpose of this exercise is to understand how you approach drafting guidance on
collecting ESG data. This exercise consists of further defining an ESG metric and providing specific guidance on how to collect this data point.
We have already provided a basic definition of the metric as well as identified what were the sources behind the creation of this metric. We’d like you to fill
out the missing sections, meaning points (c) Expanded Definition, (d) Why Novata Selected This Metric, (e) Step-by-Step Process on How to Collect this Data.
The total word count for this exercise is 300 words. The target audience for this exercise are the companies who are collecting the ESG data. They belong to
all types of industries so the guidance has to apply to all.
Here are the instructions for each section, to be filled-out below:
Here, we are looking to define terms within the definition, e.g what does a Human Rights policy entail? What do we understand to be the ‘value chain’?
Why Novata Selected This Metric
Here, we are looking for an explanation of why it is important for a company to be collecting this data point. We’re here looking to provide broader, societal
context on why this metric is relevant, as well as a more self-serving argument of why this metric will help the company (e.g. companies that are more
diverse perform better than their peers).
Step-by-Step Process on How to Collect this Data
This section provides step-by-step instructions on how to collect this data. We are here identifying who within the company should be able to help access
this data, how the data should be assessed to match the definition.
Renewable Energy Consumption
This metric tracks the percentage of total energy consumed by the entities owned or controlled by the organization that is from renewable energy, in the last
