Contemporary literature covers a wide array of topics. Major themes in contemporary literature include work, family, justice, politics, and the meaning of life.
You will remember that one of the six traits of postmodernism is multiculturalism. After the 1960s, we begin reading/studying writers from varied ethnic and
cultural backgrounds. Many authors such as Jhumpa Lahiri, Junot Diaz, Sherman Alexie, and Natasha Tretheway write about race in America. Each author
uses his or her background to discuss their perspectives on themes of family, justice, work, and life.
Many authors such as George Saunders blend elements of popular culture and genre fiction into their literature. Contemporary authors frequently continue to
use the techniques of earlier American literary movements, especially those of the Postmodernists.
