2- The Ottoman Empire

HIS4953 The Ottoman Empire Final Paper Instructions GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS Papers will be approximately 8-10 pages in length, double-spaced, 12-point font, 1″ margins. The paper will analyze the topic that you previously chose and reported to me in your paper proposals. You must use both our course materials and relevant outside scholarly sources that you found during your research or that were recommended to you in my feedback on your paper proposals. Please remember that your paper cannot rely solely on our course materials. Also, please do not use internet sources chosen at random. Your paper will be evaluated on the basis of 1) how clearly and effectively you introduce your topic and provide background information, 2) how effectively you construct your arguments and present your discussion, 3) how effectively you use evidence from both assigned and outside sources to support your arguments, and 4) how carefully you follow the assignment instructions provided in this document. Your paper is due Wednesday, May 11 th by 11:59 pm. TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS 1. Please number your pages. 2. Give your paper a title reflecting your topic. 3. Quotations: Do not quote any source simply for the sake of quoting, and limit the number of direct quotes to a few so that they do not form more than 10% of your paper. Choose the passages you quote, if any, carefully, and position them in your paper so that they clearly support the points you are making without interrupting the flow of your argument. When citing secondary sources, it is usually better to paraphrase than to quote directly. 4. If you do quote any publication verbatim, you should use quotation marks and cite the page number on which the quoted material appears. This can be accomplished either with a footnote or with an in-text citation. Example: Lamenting the downturn in book illustration, especially in Italy, Henderson observes that “not only in Milan but in Florence and Bologna, many miniaturists had abandoned working on books and begun making odd single-leaf pictures…” (Henderson, 23). 5. When you include material taken from primary or secondary sources, you should cite these sources in footnotes, or with in-text citations, and include a bibliography of these sources at the end of your paper. Please use a consistent note and bibliographical form. Generic examples are as follows: 1ST CITATION IN A FOOTNOTE: 2 1 John Henderson, Florence Under Siege: Surviving Plague in an Early Modern City (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2017), 29-32. FOLLOWING CITATIONS IN FOOTNOTES: 2Henderson, Florence Under Siege, 46-8. IN-TEXT CITATION: Plague had profound implications for trade; one of the most severely affected areas was textiles (Henderson, 141). CITATION IN BIBLIOGRAPHY: Henderson, John. Florence Under Siege: Surviving Plague in an Early Modern City. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2017. Please remember that citing your sources is extremely important in order to avoid the problem of plagiarism. There will be an automatic SafeAssign originality check. 6. The bibliography page cannot form more than 1 page of your paper. 7. A Title/Cover page is not necessary, but if you have one, it will not count towards the minimum page requirement.
