This exercise is intended to assist you in selecting the furniture for the final project as well as the assignment for this module. Here, you will determine the furniture needs for the final project by creating a preliminary count of required quantities for all furniture items. (See the final project topic Furniture floor plan and assignment description as reference).
Let’s start by counting different types and quantities of each type of seating.
An example of chair count is provided for quick reference. Note that different colors highlight chairs on the plan view. There are five colors. Each color is highlighting a different chair symbol/ type of chair.

Review the symbol legend below and the basic descriptions provided for each symbol. Each symbol tells us a lot of information about the type of seating that should be specified.
Count the number of each symbol/ color on the above plan and record the count in the right column of the work sheet. Yellow symbol count is recorded for you to get started. Go ahead and count quantities of pink, blue, light blue and red highlighted chair symbols and record the counts in the appropriate line. When you are done with this portion all shaded fields should be completed.

Let’s look for different types and quantities of tables next.
From the furniture plan symbols shown, how many different occasional tables are shown on the plan? How many of each type of occasional table are needed? How many different types/ sizes of conference tables are needed? How many of each type are needed?
HINT: The way to differentiate between occasional table and a conference table in a furniture plan:
Conference tables – Notice how front edge of chairs are shown under the table in the two examples below. When chairs are positioned this way, a meeting or dining height table is designated (30” high table for our project).

Occasional tables – Notice how the chairs are placed away from the table in the two examples below. Chairs positioned this way indicates an occasional table height (18” – 20” in height, respectively)

Use highlighters of different colors to mark the different types and quantities of occasional tables and conference tables. You can print the floor plan and use highlighter pens, color pencils or crayons to count table types. Alternatively, open a copy of the plan in your preferred image editing software to highlight table types digitally.
The first few are recorded to get you started. Complete counts and fill in the rest of the information for all tables you count in the furniture plan. When you are done with this portion all shaded fields should be completed.
