A. (Chapter 31) The Moose begin to gain recognition from town teams and begin to play tournaments in various towns. However, Saul is nostalgic for the “reserve hockey life”. How does he describe this nostalgia and what does it say about Saul? Do you have any similar experiences to share (leaving the familiar)?

B) In Chapters 35-36 we see a conflict between Saul and his teammates. They want Saul to take the opportunity to play with the Toronto Marlboros, while Saul is content to stay in Manitouwadge. Saul says, “It took them three weeks to get to me” (152). Explain the difference in perspective between Saul and his Moose teammates regarding the offer from the Toronto Marlboros. Can you personally relate to such a difference in perspective?

C) Saul has just left the Toronto Marlboros after feeling that he was “broken”. In Chapter 39 he flashes back to an incident from St. Jerome’s involving Rebecca Wolf and her sister Katherine. “The last time they brought Katherine up from the basement she was broken” (167). Comment on this theme of being “broken” and the mindset of those who want to break others.

D) In Chapters 45-46 we are introduced to Ervin Sift, who Saul describes as an “angel” (186). What is special about Ervin? Have you had such an “angel” in your life?

E. Any aspect/topic from Chapter 27 to the end which interests you.

* Consider the rubric.
