Assessment 1 Instructions: Leadership and Motivation
Submit a 3-4-page job application (based upon the CapraTek activity), detailing a motivational theory or practice,
the qualifications you believe are most important to the job, and a self-appraisal of how you measure up to them.
Introduction
Note: This course has six assessments related to the phases of a project that you will define and conduct.
Developing the project requires specific steps that must be carried out in a certain order. Therefore, you must
complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.
Course Scenario
This course has six assessments related to a single scenario in which a company, CapraTek, is building a team to
introduce a motivational program within the company. In this first assessment, you will apply to a job posting for a
motivational programs director.
Subsequent assessments are based upon this scenario. Detailed instructions are provided in the respective
assessments. The assessments consider the following:
Recruiting team members.
Team communications.
Developing and motivating teams and individuals.
Change and employee management.
Team conflict.
Most complex projects have a manager who leads, guides, and motivates the team to deliver a successful outcome.
Successful leaders possess styles and characteristics that motivate those around them. They must also exhibit an
emotional intelligence, which is described at a high level as self-awareness and social awareness. These are
important elements of good leadership and these will help to form the perception of a leader.
Note: Complete the assessments in this course in the order in which they are presented.
Overview
Oftentimes, projects are identified by upper-level managers seeking employees to drive an initiative. In this
assessment, you will consider an initiative defined in the CapraTek: Team Leadership and Motivation activity, which
you will revisit throughout this course. Motivating team members is often an important component to successful
projects. In fact, in this activity, it is a priority for the entire company. You will need to be versed in motivational
trends, models, and best practices to address the challenge.

CapraTek Activity
CapraTek is a virtual environment that simulates a real-world company with a variety of manufacturing and IT project
management products. The CapraTek activities provide context for applying professional strategies, practice skills,
and build competencies that you can apply to course assessments and in your career.
Preparation
The following resources are required to complete the assessment.
CapraTek: Team Leadership and Motivation Part 1.
In this activity, you are asked to apply for the position of motivational programs director. Once you have completed
the activity, you should be prepared respond to each of three portions of the job announcement.
As you prepare to complete this assessment, you may want to think about other related issues to deepen your
understanding or broaden your viewpoint. You are encouraged to consider the questions below and discuss them
with a fellow learner, a work associate, an interested friend, or a member of your professional community. Note that
these questions are for your own development and exploration and do not need to be completed or submitted as
part of your assessment.
What do you consider to be your strengths as a project manager and leader?
What motivates you as a team member? Is it different from other people?
What are some of the current trends and theories regarding the motivation of employees?
Directions
Complete the following three parts in a 3–4-page response to the application requirements outlined in the CapraTek
activity.
Part 1: Leadership Characteristics
Analyze the leadership characteristics that you believe would allow an individual to excel in this position. Support
your analysis with references to professional resources.
Part 2: Personal Statement of Leadership Skills
Write a personal statement evaluating your leadership skills, style, and experience to lead the project team. The
statement should address the needs you outlined in your analysis of leadership characteristics in Part 1.
Part 3: Motivational Trends, Ideas, and Practices
Describe a trend, a model, an idea, or a best practice in the motivation of employees that is promising for the
CapraTek activity. Include an analysis of why it may be promising. Document any assumptions regarding the
CapraTek activity that enable you to specifically analyze the appropriateness of your trend, idea, model, or best
practice.
Additional Requirements
Your assessment should meet the following requirements:
APA format: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting.
Length: 3–4 double-spaced pages.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Competency 1: Analyze current practices in the motivation of employees and teams.
Analyze a trend, an idea, a model, or a best practice in the motivation of teams that is promising for
the CapraTek activity.
Competency 5: Analyze the characteristics of an effective team leader.
Analyze the leadership characteristics needed for an individual to excel in a position.
Analyze one’s own leadership skills, style, and experience to lead a project team.
Competency 7: Communicate effectively.
Communicate effectively in a professional manner consistent with the standards and conventions of
project management.
