Raven wrote: Applied psychology is “the use of methods and findings of scientific psychology to solve practical problems of human and animal behavior and experience (Britannica)”. Some connections between applied psychology and war are that after the war ended, “American leaders turned to social science, especially psychology, to solve the problems of the postwar world, to give them tools by which to manage the irrational masses, to reshape the family and the workplace (Leahey, pg. 327, 2018)”. Applied psychology was used to prepare soldiers in the U.S. Army for the World Wars. The psychologists tried to find soldiers who could possibly show symptoms of mental illness such as depression or PTSD. These psychologists wanted to do more to help so, “the APA formed 12 committees concerned with different aspects of the war, ranging from acoustic problems to recreation” (Leahey, pg. 435, 2018). Also, the war created a need for clinical treatment for soldiers with mental health issues because of what they saw and experienced.

Lindsay wrote: World War I played a major role in shaping the modern world—where the start of the Great War in 1917 followed two decades of significant social change including the industrialization and urbanization of the United States (Leahey, 2018). Progressive politicians saw this social change as a way to achieve their own goal of social control yet were unsuccessful (Leahey, 2018). Following a period of gloom and despair, American leaders looked to the social sciences, specifically psychology, to essentially reshape America. Psychology became one of the most important institutions in society for leaders during the twentieth century as it provided insight into their own behavior (Leahey, 2018). Psychology was then utilized to train military personnel in preparation for World War II (Leahey, 2018).
