SCENARIO

You are a health educator who will be speaking at a career day for college students interested in pursuing a career in global health. As these students are new to the field, you have been asked to tailor your presentation to laypeople. You have been asked to give a general overview of the landscape of global health in your presentation, including the impact of the World Health Organization and a brief overview of the various laws and regulations that impact the functioning of these organizations. Additionally, you have been asked to select two other major organizations in global health and explain their focus, role, and impacts.

DIRECTIONS

Global Health Fundamentals: In order to introduce students to the fundamentals of global health, you have been asked to begin your talk by describing the World Health Organization, the treaties that facilitate operations by global health organizations, and the impact that international organizations, such as the World Health Organization and the United Nations, play in influencing global health priorities and practices. In this part of your presentation, address the following:

Describe the impact of the World Health Organization on global health. In describing the impact of the World Health Organization, be sure to address the following:
What is the mission and vision of the World Health Organization?
What is the reach of the World Health Organization? In how many countries does it operate?
What role does the World Health Organization play in setting objectives for public health around the world?

Select and describe one global treaty designed to facilitate operations of global healthcare organizations. In describing this treaty, be sure to address the following:
What is the name of the treaty?
What need was the treaty designed to address?
When was the treaty implemented and what have been the effects of the treaty among global health organizations?

Major Organizations in Global Health: You already introduced your audience to the World Health Organization, now select two other major organizations in global health. One should be a multilateral or bilateral organization and one should be a nongovernmental organization. Once you select two organizations, address the following:

Describe the mission and vision of two global health organizations. In describing the mission and vision of your selected organizations, be sure to address the following:
What is the mission and vision of each organization? How do the mission and vision drive the priorities and programs pursued by the organization?
What is the reach of each organization? In how many countries do they operate?
What is the governing structure of the organization?
How do governmental global health organizations differ from nongovernmental global health organizations?

Describe the impact of public health programs run by each organization. In describing the impact of these programs, be sure to address the following:
What countries, communities, and populations are affected by each program? Consider how these organizations are active in both the United States and across the world.
How is the program connected to the mission and vision of the organization?
How does the program impact public health in its targeted community?

Recommend a public health program or policy that would be in line with the mission/vision of a selected organization and justify the recommendation. As you recommend this public health program or policy, be sure to address the following:
Would this program be better suited to a governmental organization or a nongovernmental organization?
How would this program affect your target population? What are the potential health benefits of this program?
How is this program in line with the mission and vision of your selected organization?
