Domestic Violence Case Study
• David Smith (Father)
• Mary Smith (Mother)
• Bobby Smith (Son)
• Jean Smith (Daughter)

David is married to Mary, and he is 26 years old.

Mary and David have been married for 4 years and Mary is 24 years old.

Mary and David have a son, Bobby, he is 3.

Mary and David have a daughter, Jean, who is a new born.

David and Mary met while they were attending university, they began dating and before they married, they were considered, by their friends and family, to be the ideal couple. In fact, many of David and Mary’s friends commented directly to them that they wished their marriage was a wonderful as David and Mary’s. However, behind the perfect looking façade, there were problems that had existed since very early in the relationship.

In university David and Mary liked to have fun with friends, they went to parties and drank alcohol and smoked marijuana.

Both David and Mary seemed to manage the pressures of school life and then work and family life after university however, Mary continued to use alcohol to cope with day-to-day stress. And David worked hard to cover up any issues that were seemingly caused by Mary’s drinking.

After Bobby was born, Mary became distant and harder to communicate with. Her alcohol use also increased. This frustrated David because he felt he was taking on the bulk load of the work within the home. He fed the baby, cleaned the house, worked a full-time job, and managed the family’s money.

David had a father that drank alcohol too often and became violent with David and his siblings. David’s mother worked hard to counteract the issues caused by David’s father’s drinking.

David and Mary had another child. Jean was born two years after Bobby and by this time, Mary had been abusing alcohol. It was clear to David that she had been drinking during the pregnancy with Jean.

Jean was born prematurely, and the doctors advised David and Jean that their new baby may have issues related to her premature birth.

When David and Mary were finally able to bring Jean back to the house, David had become incredibly resentful towards Mary. A few days after they arrived home, during an argument between David and Mary, David grabbed Mary by the neck and almost strangled her.

Mary called 911 and when the police arrived, David told the police officers what he had done, and he was arrested.
Mary received medical attention at home from the paramedics but did not require treatment for her injuries.

With David in jail, Mary needed help with the children, so she called her mother and father to come and help.

Mary did not want to call David’s parents because she knew about David’s father’s issues with violence and drinking and she did not want to involve that problem with her family.

Mary’s parents stayed with Mary for several weeks because David was not allowed to return to the family house and was not allowed to see his children or wife.

Mary placed a restraining order on David.
