Thoroughly and completely read How to Think by Alan Jacobs. After reading the entire book (the Introduction, Chapters 1 through 7, the Conclusion, and the Afterword), students will complete a book review that includes both a summary and a critical analysis. For the summary, students should compose one paragraph summarizing each section of the book (the Introduction, Chapters 1 through 7, the Conclusion, and the Afterword). You should number your paragraphs (or use headings) in such a way that it is clear which chapter or section you are summarizing. In total, you will have 10 paragraphs in your summary.
PLEASE NOTE that you MUST provide in-text citations to the page numbers and/or page ranges you are referencing. For the summary portion of the book review, you should place a page number after every sentence. Failure to include these citations will result in a zero on the paper.
While there is no maximum length for your summary, the summary of the book should be a minimum of 3-4 pages. After the summary, students should compose a critical analysis section that evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the book and that offers any additional insights that you learned from the book. In-text citations to the page numbers you are referencing must also be included throughout the critical analysis, though they do not have to be after every sentence. The critical analysis should span 1-2 pages.
Formatting should conform to standard APA guidelines with the important addition of page numbers instead of names and dates in the in-text citations (names are not required for the book review as the only source you will be citing is the book itself). In addition, papers must be double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1” margins on all sides. PLEASE NOTE: Papers that do not meet the minimum length requirements stated above or the requirements of margin, font, etc. will not be accepted and will receive the grade of zero if not corrected by the due date. Finally, the following statement must be included with the book review (either handwritten or typed), and the student’s name must be both printed and signed (electronic signature can simply be denoted by typing your full name with an [S] in front of it):
