Write an essay that compares any two empires we have studied in this course. Hellenic and roman empire.
Answer each of these questions:
a. How were each set up politically?
b. How were their respective societies set up?
c. How were their economies set up?
d. How did each “fall” or “decay?”
e. What can we learn from each of these empires, in terms of how best to organize ourselves and
to ensure our society does not “fall” or “decay?”
Remember to not just discuss each empire separately, but also to compare the two.
Requirements:
The essay should be a minimum of 2 pages, a maximum of 4 pages (typed, double-spaced, 12
point New Times Roman font). Use the standard five paragraph format of writing (Intro, Body,
Conclusion). Have a Title Page with your name (not included in the 2 page minimum) – use any
format for that title page. Why a title page? We’re just avoiding the manipulation of page space
often used by students to reduce two pages to only a page and a half. 🙂
Sources:
You will have to do some research on this. Use a minimum of three sources (the textbook does
not count). Only one source can be an internet source. Be sure it is a good source! A blog or wiki
or ask.com type of website is not acceptable. However, you may use anything published in the
online database of JSTOR, accessible through the online Valencia Library. To be clear, JSTOR
sources count as non-internet sources. JSTOR will provide peer reviewed articles and e-books –
all are acceptable, as long as they are retrieved from JSTOR. There is one exception: you may
not use a Book Review article. If you do not know how to use the online Valencia Library, do
not contact Professor Szalma. Contact the library. (This is not being mean, this is forcing you to
find things and figure out things on your own. It is also forcing you to use the knowledge of
experts). ONLY JSTOR will be acceptable as a database! ABC-CLIO and EBSCO are not
JSTOR!!!
