Your literature review should cite relevant recent research, and seminal research on your topic. Well-written
literature reviews do not list the findings of study after study, but rather integrate these studies under topics
in common within the broader topic of study. These topics are separated by section subheadings to create
a smoother overall flow to the section. Literature reviews can also critique the existing methods or studies,
which add strength to justifying why you are conducting your study. Finally, the literature review should end
with a subsection that contains your research questions or hypotheses. Please use quotations sparingly –
the purpose of this is to synthesize what others have done, and demonstrate your understanding of the
research (i.e. paraphrase), rather than using many direct quotes.
Remember to use APA format for any citations and section headings/subheadings. This section should be
approximately 7-10 pages. For the draft that is due, your submission can be 4-5 pages, showing progress
toward completing a full literature review.
The data I will use was obtained from the United States Department of Commerce Bureau of the census for
the 2009 survey. Every five to six years, the Annual Survey of Jails (ACJ)obtains data on the jail
population’s size and selected inmate characteristics, and the type of programs run by the jails. The
question I would like to address is whether there is a difference in reoffending when dealing with U.S.
IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS EMFORCEMENT AND BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS.
