Triangle Factory Fire

Submit both a hard-copy at the beginning of class and a digital copy to the Triangle Fire Reflection Paper dropbox as a Word document or a pdf file. I will not
grade the assignment unless both a hard-copy and a digital copy have been submitted.
You will write a short evidence-based essay (no more than 5 pages) about your role and your experience associated with our class exercise on the Triangle
Fire of 1911.
This assignment includes a research component. I will be expecting you to use the Kheel Center, Cornell University website: “The 1911 Triangle Factory Fire,”
https://trianglefire.ilr.cornell.edu/index.html (including your assigned primary document and the section on the “story of the fire”) in developing your
testimony. You may also want to use your textbook for context. You may use additional scholarly sources such as published books and journal articles
accessed through the Walker Library (may be available on-line). In writing your paper, do not rely on general internet web sites.
In a coherent, well-structured essay you will address the following issues:
Briefly identify your role and place your character within a historic context.
Present your testimony.
Based upon your testimony, the testimonies of the other participants, and your research, reflect on the question of who was responsible for the Triangle Fire
tragedy.
Identify and explain the reforms that resulted from the Triangle Fire.
Reflect on your experience in terms of what and how you learned. Be specific. Back up your claims with examples.
Guidelines for Formal Writing Assignments
Your essay should be double-spaced using a standard font size (11 or 12-point type). Please use a simple, clean font such as Times New Roman, Arial,
Garamond, etc. Use normal margins on all sides and a standard left justification.
Writing assignments are to be written following the rules of correct grammar and spelling, both of which will be taken into consideration in the evaluation of
the essay. Be sure to proofread your writing as grammar and spell checks typically do not catch words used in incorrect contexts. Pages should be
numbered. If a hard-copy is required, staple your paper with one staple in the upper left-hand corner.
Writing assignments must be original AND analytical and should include well-thought-out responses to each aspect of the assignment. Do not use any direct
quotes.
You must provide specific examples from the secondary and/or primary sources to support your main points. You MUST cite your sources. Historians use
the University of Chicago Press’s Chicago Manual of Style or Kate L. Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations. You may use
a different style of citation that you are more familiar with such as MLA.
Grading Criteria
40% Is the essay coherent, well-structured and organized?
20% Do you follow our guidelines for formal writing assignments? This includes citation.
