SIMIO PROJECT – COVID Drive Through Test Site
Project Elements to Deliver:
Main Items Specifics
• SBAR
• Methodology Workup
o Lean Six Sigma – DMAIC
o Design Thinking
• Simio Simulation Design
• Final Presentation • Process Map
• Staffing Model and Schedule
• Design and Layout
• Data Analytics
Scenario:
Testing for the COVID-19 virus is one of the best defenses and strategy to mitigate the spread of the pandemic. Your renown as a highly competent project team has gained the attention of health officials in Cambridge, UK in eastern England. They need to erect a drive through testing site for the city. They are authorizing you the ability to pick any location suitable to meet their needs and requirements.
• Must be able to service 1500-2000 patients daily on the weekdays, no limits for weekends
• Open from the hours 7A to 7P Monday through Friday
• Open from the hours 9A to 1P Saturday and Sunday
• Site cannot be in residential areas
• Site can use any public space deemed necessary
• Every patient needs to be registered with the health system to get a swab
o 40% of population have existing records
• Every patient must have Photo ID
• Will consider pre-registration with barcode verification
• Define Staffing Model and Resource Cost
o Staff Role Groups Available:
Registered Nurses (RNs) [at least 1 on-site]
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs)
Medical Assistants (MAs)
o Outlined Testing Site Job Functions
Registration
Swabbing
Lab Runner/Currier (carrying swabs to the lab for processing)
o Based on scope of various staff types available and testing site job functions, develop the staffing model (how many of each staff will fill each job function) needed to optimally fulfill your testing site operations (including the projected monthly cost of your staffing model)
• Develop Staffing Schedules
o How many staff are needed by role group, to support your proposed drive through testing site operations (Monday – Sunday, see hours of operations above)
o Staffing Schedules based on 8 hour workday for RNs, LVNs, MAs
Final deliverable should include total hours by staff role group, calculate projected total full time equivalents (FTEs) by role group, total cost by role group, and a completed staffing schedule
• What you will need to research
o Scope of practice for RNs, LVNs, MAs
Who has the different skill sets based job function
o What is an FTE and how do you calculate it?
o What are all the elements and responsibilities for a test site
o Considerations
o Expectations
Variables & Factors:
Peak Information: Opening (7A-8A), Lunch (11A-1P), and after Work (4P)
100-300 Patients during peak times
Renege Rate: 2% – Before patient gets to registration
New Patient: 6-10 minutes to register
Existing Patient: 2-5 minutes to register
Pre-Registered Patient: 1 minute check-in
15% of total population will use it
Swabbing: 5 minutes
RN (3min) | LVN (4min) | MA (5min)
Staffing Cost RN ($25/hr.) | LVN ($20/hr.) |MA ($15/hr.)
Goal:
• Best solution at the lowest possible cost
• Optimal Throughput
• Most complete model considering all functions, expectations, and situations at the testing site
