Research Prospectus Poster

Writing 250 Prospectus Poster
Purpose and Audience
The chair of your major department has read your Research Prospectus and believes your
research proposal has merit. Because of this, he or she has asked you to present an overview of
your research to the department’s faculty before their monthly staff meeting. This presentation
will be in the form of a poster to advertise and visualize your research. Your goal is to show
faculty, or experts in your field, the research you have completed this semester in hopes that they
will commit funding and resources to enable you to carry out your proposed research.
Process
ü Be sure to review the materials in the Linked Resources folder; those resources provide
an overview of the genre and tips on how to design your poster. Do note, though, that
many of the sample posters you’ll find there present completed studies rather than
proposed studies. You’ll need to adapt the format to suit the demands of this project and
audience.
ü Your poster should be completed in PowerPoint or Microsoft Word (you may use another
platform with my approval). Do also note that posters composed in Word have
considerably less available space; proper academic research posters are created in
PowerPoint. Whichever program you compose in, you’ll want to convert to pdf before
submitting the final draft.
ü The poster should accurately advertise your research using both visuals (images, tables,
charts, graphs) and text (brief summaries, headings) to aid in the faculty’s understanding
of your research. Basically, these two modes (text and visuals) should work together to
create an interesting and accurate representative summary of your research this semester.
ü You should include some, but not all, of the research you have done this semester. Your
poster should represent the existing research on your topic in a brief introduction with
citations and offer a brief overview of your proposed study’s methods. Visuals should
illustrate key concepts related to the existing research or your proposed study.
ü You also need to properly document any source you use in an APA-format References
list on your poster. This list should include the secondary sources you reference along
with any visual sources (such as images, tables, graphs, or charts) you include on the
poster.
Evaluation Criteria

You will be evaluated based on both the quality and professionalism of your use of the multiple
modes, as well as the rhetorical effectiveness of the poster.

Requirements
• A poster that includes both visual and textual elements to “advertise” your research this
semester to an audience of faculty and researchers in your field
• At least two visuals that illustrate key concepts related to the existing research and/or
your proposed study
• Cited references in APA format on poster
