Paper details
Written Assignments: Students are expected to present solid content and convey their message using
appropriate grammar, syntax, punctuation, and language. Written assignments will be reviewed for both
content and presentation.
Proper citations and bibliography (formatted according to the APA Style Guide) will be expected for all
material that is taken directly or paraphrased from another source.
Papers should be typed, double-spaced, one inch margins, with 12 point font.
Your formal papers should:
Include all aspects of the required components. Be precise. Be concise. Write in active voice.(See
paragraph above)
Papers will score better that have few sentence structure and grammatical errors.
Demonstrate a clear understanding of the leadership theory (or theories) and examples are appropriately
used.
Provide a response that is personalized throughout the assignment. Reflection is in-depth.
RESEARCH PAPERS – (THESE ARE RESEARCH PAPERS) – 3 at 10 points each
Each student is required to write a 3-4 page double-spaced paper on a film that you have seen that is
required for this course or on a film of your choosing.
If you choose a film that is not required for this class, I must approve the film before you start writing.
The leadership theories we are studying MUST be appropriately applicable.
You are not discussing leadership behavior.
These papers should demonstrate and illustrate how you are critically interpreting the applicable leadership
theory.
You must state a clear 1-2 sentence purpose statement at the introduction of each paper. This is your
thesis statement. Your thesis statement establishes the purpose and direction of the paper.
You can compare and contrast films; and/or expand on leadership concepts from the readings. But you
build on that statement using context from the films, readings, and personal experiences.
Additionally, each leadership analysis must adhere to standards set in the “Written Assignments” section of
this syllabus. Pay attention to how your analysis integrates the film, readings, leadership implications, and
personal experiences.
Avoid grandiose and general statements about leadership—be as specific as possible toward the points
necessary to write and submit a successful film critique. Always assume readers have watched the films
and completed the readings.
These papers are not a review or summary of the films or readings.
Questions to Consider when writing your research papers:
What leadership theory is represented in the film?
Who (if any) were leaders in this film?
How were individual leaders or followers changed or different from the beginning compared to the end of
the film? Did any leadership concepts play a role in this change or difference? If so, explain.
Did you resonate with or relate to the film, why or why not?
How does the film relate to the assigned reading(s)?
Overall, what did you learn from this film(s) and readings?
