Research Essay Abstract/Annotated Bibliography Instructions

Instructions
The Research Essay Abstract and Annotated Bibliography is
a process assignment developed to assist students in
mastering APA format for research and documentation.
Students will be required to submit a research abstract
based on the essay prompt, and an annotated bibliography
in correct APA format.
Students are strongly encouraged to schedule a session
with the Centre for Academic English in preparation for this
assignment, in addition to using the APA material provided.
Outcomes:
• Write a research abstract that provides a clear
overview of the essay’s argument, and the research
used to support the argument.
• Provide accurate keywords that make the document
searchable
• Master APA format for in text and reference
documentation
Restrictions:
• Assignments must contain a cover page, abstract, and
annotated bibliography in correct APA format.
• Minor errors (missing punctuation, minor spelling
errors etc.) will receive -1 per error; major errors that
lead to incorrect citation/documentation (i.e. provide
misleading information about a source) will receive -2
per error.
Format Checklist:
• Entire document must be double spaced and in 12 pt
font
• Cover page contains “Running head:”, title in all caps
in left corner of header; pagination in right corner of
the header
• Student/assignment/class/professor information center
page
• On the abstract page, title in all caps in left corner of
header (no “Running head:”); pagination in right
corner of the header
• “Abstract” appears at the top and center of page (no
extra spacing)
• Abstract paragraph beginning at left margin with no
indent
• Abstract paragraph should contain (in this order): a
clear introduction to the primary text; the research
thesis as a complete sentence; discussion topics, in
which can be included research to support those topics
• Abstract must be followed by “Keywords” (indented,
capitalized, and italicized), followed by a list of all
major keywords (only capitalize proper nouns)
• Annotated References must begin on a new page
• References must be in alphabetical order, and in
correct APA format for each resource (pay careful
attention to capitalization and italicization rules for
different types of titles)
• Each reference must begin at the left margin for the
first line; all subsequent lines will be indented
• Each reference must contain an annotation that
contains a brief summary and indicates why the
resources is used in support of the essay topics
Comparative Research Essay Instructions
(25%)
The Research Essay (25%), due Sunday of Week 11, combines
close textual analysis with background scholarly research of at least
four secondary sources. Students will choose examine a primary
text from the course shell (different from the ones the student
covered in Essay 1 and the Oral Presentation) in the context of how
it deals with cultural and historical issues of multiculturalism in
Canada, or how it represents culture, or cultural diaspora, based on
factual research of the subject. Does the literary text have merit
when compared to historical and scholarly analyses, or does it miss
the mark? Students may also bring in other primary literary texts of
their choosing to enrich the comparison.
Outcomes:
• Demonstrate skills in textual analysis
• Demonstrate skills in research and documentation
• Apply comparative frames of analysis between fiction
and fact
• Provide a nuanced, well contextualized understanding
of a literary representation of a social issue connected
to multiculturalism/diaspora
Restrictions:
• Essays must provide a close textual analysis of the
literary text and set up a clear comparative argument
that evaluates the merits (or lack thereof) of the
literary text when compared to historical and scholarly
analyses of the same issue
• Essays must be a minimum of 5 paragraphs and 1800
words long
• Essays much be well crafted and not contain any
errors in spelling, grammar, sentence structure and
mechanics
• Essays much be in correct APA format and meet the
requirement for scholarly research. A minimum of 4
scholarly peer-reviewed secondary sources are
required to support the arguments/counter arguments
on the primary text
