OVERVIEW (Things to keep in mind):
-Your MUS 210 Final Project is worth 20% of your cumulative grade in this course!
-This Final Project consists of two main components:
Part 1 of your project is a written Expanded “Super Size” Lesson Plan &
Assessment Rubric (3-4 pages).
Part 2 of your project is a 5-minute demo lesson presentation that you will
present to the class during our final class of the semester on 12/9.
*Please carefully read the instructions below to fully understand how to successfully
accomplish parts 1 and 2 of your Final Project.*
INSTRUCTIONS:
PART 1: Extended “Super Size” Lesson Plan (3-4 pages)
A)Choose multiple lesson plan aspects from the four learning modules we explored throughout
the semester (rhythm learning; singing in the classroom; composing in the classroom; music
as social vehicle) that you most enjoyed learning about to create a new & expanded “Super
Size” Lesson Plan that includes at least three separate learning activities.
You are welcome to incorporate lesson plan ideas that you have used in previous lesson plans
throughout the semester, or you can come up with new ones! The overall goal is to combine
aspects from different lesson plans over the course of the semester to create this new expanded
one! I.E. combining aspects of the rhythm and composing lesson plans for example! Or, another
example could be combining aspects of “Composing in the classroom” with “Singing In the
classroom”. For this example, perhaps the 3 activities for this lesson plan could be: 1)Singing
warmups with the class to ensure that everyone is singing in a healthy manner, 2)Creating a word
bank with the class about all the things to do during summer break, and 3)Break the class into
“rock bands” and have each group compose 3-4 rhyming lines of lyrics to be incorporated into
our group summer song.
This above example is just one way to go about this project!
Remember, this Final Lesson plan needs to be AT LEAST 3-4 PAGES, double-spaced, 12pt
font. So make sure you include every possible detail!
Further, this extended lesson plan should follow the same template format as previous lesson
plans and, hence, it should include the following bullet points: Your focus topic(s), Age group,
Repertoire, Lesson activities (remember, you need at least 3 of them!), and Main lesson
goal/objective.
*PLEASE NOTE: In order to meet the 3-page minimum requirement for this assignment, you
must include as many details as possible! For example, when discussing what repertoire you
will use in your lesson plan, it is important that you specifically reference the particular songs
that you’ll use to achieve your learning objectives! It is not acceptable to say “I will play some
rock songs for the kids”; you need to be specific about what songs you will use!
*OTHER TIPS: When considering how to approach this lesson plan design, remember that it
helps to incorporate teaching subjects that you are interested in eventually teaching one day! For
example, if you may want to be a science teacher, you could create a lesson plan that
incorporates a science learning objective. Perhaps have your class write a song about all of the
different dinosaurs that existed! Or a song about the different planets of the solar system! These
are just a few ideas to get you started!
B)After you have created this “super size” lesson plan, you then need to design an Assessment
Rubric (utilizing the same template that you used when you completed the assessment rubric for
your rhythm learning lesson plan) that appropriately reflects the goals and learning objectives of
this new extended lesson plan: What are you assessing? How will you know the students have
learned? What specific evidence will you see or hear?
-Submit both the LESSON PLAN and the RUBRIC in ONE document to the appropriate
folder on Blackboard!
PART 2: 5-minute Demo Lesson Presentation
During our final class on 12/9, you will present a five-minute presentation to the class where
you will have the opportunity to discuss your new extended lesson plan and its associated
activities. If you find it helpful, you can create an accompanying powerpoint presentation to
share with the class to help convey your learning goals for your lesson plan, but it is not
necessary. Overall, during this 5-minute presentation, you are expected to explain:
-Why you chose this direction for your lesson plan (i.e. what it is about rhythm learning and
composing in the classroom that you were drawn to).
-Why you chose the particular age group that this lesson is designed for
-What is the main learning objective of this lesson plan?
-Provide a brief overview of the three activities that are included in your lesson plan.
You should be able to cover all of the above topics within 5 minutes. Your presentation should be
no more or less than 5 minutes. To be fully prepared, I recommend rehearsing your presentation
with a timer before class on 12/9 to make sure that you are right at the 5 minute mark.
**NOTE: A 2-minute presentation is not acceptable!
Further, since you are preparing for a career in education, your presentation will be evaluated
based on your delivery, enthusiasm and effort. If you sound disinterested or lackadaisical in your
presentation, this will not help your grade!
