Instructions to Students
This assignment consists of 2 questions. Each question carries 50 marks.
Answer all questions solely by yourself. Handwriting, typing, computer output, image captures,
graphs, and a combination of these are allowed.
The submission should be in A4 pdf format with size no more than 5 MB. Please submit via
Blackboard turn-it-in under the subject “Take-Home Assignment” on or before the deadline
Allow 1 submission only. No submission will be accepted after the deadline.
Important Notice:
1. Students found guilty of offences related to academic integrity such as cheating in
assessment work, plagiarism, and aiding academic dishonesty, that are related to
possible cheating will be subject to (a) the penalty of having their subject result
disqualified and being given a failure grade with an appropriate remark denoting that it
is due to academic dishonesty, and (b) other appropriate disciplinary actions, depending
on the seriousness of the case, as stated in the Student Handbook.

Question 1
In the planning of a Just-in-Time (JIT) system, the lean concepts will contribute and have direct
impacts to each of its major operating sub-systems thus meeting the key objectives of JIT.
Hint: a sub-system consists of a combination of functions with cross-cooperation within the
system to achieve system objectives e.g. a Quality sub-system includes purchasing, production
and engineering functions to achieve quality excellence.
(a) Name 2 major sub-systems that commonly existed in a production/service system and
explain the purpose of the sub-systems. (Maximum 1 page for your explanations)

(b) Discuss and outline 3 lean concepts with an example each that can apply and improve
the above named sub-systems and meets the JIT system planning objectives. (Maximum
2 pages for your discussions)
Rubrics and Marking:
Part (a): Totally 20 marks. 10 marks will be given to each suggested sub-system with reasonable
explanations observing the instruction.
Part (b): Totally 30 marks. 15 marks will be given to 3 outline lean concepts with an example
each for each sub-system with appropriate and reasonable discussions observing the instruction.
Question 2
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mass Transit Railway Corp. (MTR) has the following
concerns in the consideration of the future capacity for MTR in Hong Kong:
i. What will the aggregate train passenger demand for the next 1, 5, 20 years in Hong Kong?
ii. How to determine the future capacity requirement plan for all potential train passengers?
(a) Suggest any 1 technique/concept learnt from the course and elaborate how that will help
to answer (i.) for the CEO. (Maximum 1 page for your explanations)
(b) Name 5 factors that should be considered in (a) that would affect the answers and explain
why? (Maximum 1 page for your explanations)
(c) Outline and discuss the steps and logics for the CEO’s plan of actions on (ii). (Maximum
1 page for your explanations)
Rubrics and Marking:
Part (a): Totally 15 marks. 5 marks will be given to the suggested technique/concept for each
time period with reasonable explanations observing the instruction.
Part (b): Totally 15 marks. 3 marks will be given to each suggested factor with reasonable
explanations observing the instruction.
Part (c): Totally 20 marks. 4 marks will be given to each logical suggested step with reasonable
explanations observing the instruction.
