OARS Summary Paper Instructions

After administering the OARS Questionnaires, completing the OARS Scoring Table, and creating an OARS
Analysis Report, you will write a Summary Paper. The paper should be a well-organized summary report of the
interview and the findings. It will be an extension of your OARS Analysis Report. Expand on the percentage
scores, observations, interpretation/ analysis and OARS Impairment Scores you recorded on the Analysis Form.
Most importantly, write a comprehensive Summary and Recommendations section.

The Summary Paper should:
1. Be well organized and complete.
2. Be 3 – 5 pages, double-spaced, with 1 inch margins and standard 12-point font.
3. Follow APA Style formatting, grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
4. Include an appropriate cover sheet.

The Summary Paper should include:
a. Eight sections: (each section will contain several paragraphs)
1. Introduction
2. social resources
3. economic resources
4. mental health
5. physical health
6. activities of daily living
7. utilization of services
8. and a summary and recommendations section.
b. Use proper (Level 1) headings for each section. Don’t forget to give a heading to the final
(recommendation) section. (See your APA style book, pages 62-63. Also look at the example pgs 46-47)
c. Include demographic information of the subject in narrative style as part of the introduction.
d. In each of the six areas of assessment (social, economic, mental, physical, activities of daily living,
utilization of services):
• Provide a general (not detailed) review of your findings, analysis, and observations for that specific
section including the current status of the subject.
• Referring to the Analysis Report, summarize his/her functioning for that area.
• Discuss the impairment score you assigned and provide a clear explanation indicating how you
derived your summary judgment in each area.
e. In the last section, summarize your overall findings from the assessment for the current status of the
subject. Additionally, provide your recommendations for current and future services and/or assessments.
Include:
• A summary of the global assessment of the current status of the individual.
• A summary of the subject’s current use (or lack of use) of available resources
• Based on the results of the assessment as well as your observations and analysis, provide your
recommendations for additional current or future services, resources, and/or follow-up assessments.
• Note: Even if the subject is currently doing well, address recommendations for continued good
quality of life as the subject naturally progresses in the aging process.
f. Suggestions / requirements for the final section include:
• Recommendations for additional / on-going assessment of specific areas. What areas? Why? How
often?
• What assessments (refer to the ones introduced in this course, or others you are familiar with) would you
recommend
• Are there resources (services, agencies, groups, health care, etc) that you would specifically
recommend, and why?
• What specific type of services do your recommend and why? Examples include, but not limited to:
a. Basic Maintenance Services: transportation; food, groceries; living quarters; yard; etc.
b. Supportive Services: personal care services; continuous supervision; checking services; meal
preparation; homemaker/household services; administrative, legal and protective services;
women’s/men’s groups; church; other.
c. Remedial services: social/recreation; employment; education; mental health; nursing care;
supportive devices and prostheses; physical or occupational therapy; financial assistance; care
coordination; drug management; other.
• A final section with complete interpretation and analysis of the scores and observations that are
substantiated and supported by your findings.
• Your findings should be (1) logical and (2) justified by the Percentage Scores, observations,
interpretation/analysis and OARS Impairment Scores.
• APA format and style
