Martin Luther King – Language Analysis

Watch the speech (I have included the a video link and a transcriipt of the speech as well; see below) and identify the following:

Part 1 – (15 marks)
4 images * – pictures that are formed in your mind created by descriiptive language, the more vivid the picture, the more effective the image.
4 metaphors (some metaphors can overlap with imagery; do not use one image/metaphor more than once) – While both similes and metaphors are used to
make comparisons, the difference between similes and metaphors comes down to a word. Similes use the words like or as to compare things—“Life is like a
box of chocolates.” In contrast, metaphors directly state a comparison—“Love is a battlefield.”
2 similes – See above
2 symbols – A symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people
to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences.
Make sure you identify/explain what the symbols stand for.
3 parallelisms – Parallelism in rhetoric is used to persuade, motivate, and/or evoke emotional responses in an audience and is often used in speeches. The
balance between clauses or phrases makes complex thoughts easier to process while holding the reader’s or listener’s attention. The balance in importance
is also an essential element; each phrase or idea should be as important as its counterpart.
* 2 of the images must be related to nature (climate, topography); 2 images not related to nature
Present your answers in point form; take your answers verbatim from the speech. Do not add commentary or discussion. Provide the exact quote from the
speech.
Part 2 – (5 marks)
Finally, identify and discuss a specific element of the text of the speech that you found particularly compelling or effective; explain what effect it had on you
and why you think it did so. (40-60 words)
