How and why does Stewart blend her religious commitments with practical social and political change? What are the links between God, faith, and the world?
What is the overall effect of combining them?
Your paper must have a title. A title focuses the author’s and the reader’s attention on the main theme under discussion.
Your paper must have a clear thesis statement tied to readings in the syllabus. Please make sure that your paper includes a direct citation (with footnote and
page number) to a theme, concept, or interpretation found in course readings.
Citations. The first citation to the primary or secondary source should have a footnote. Subsequent references can use in-text citation format, as follows:
Richardson’s anthology contains the speeches and public prayers of an interesting public figure, Mrs. Maria W. Stewart. Stewart railed against the racism that
African American women faced in the Boston labor market.[1] “How long shall the fair daughters of Africa be compelled to bury their minds and talents
beneath a load of iron pots and kettles?” she asked in 1831 (Stewart, 38). Few heeded her burning question.
Please note that the final punctuation goes AFTER the parenthesis, making the citation part of the sentence in which the quotation appears.
The prompts for the papers included the syllabus (and copied in D2L) are OPTIONAL. These questions are intended to help you focus your own curiosity and
questions; the position you take or the argument you develop is your own. Your opinion, as students sometimes put it, is welcome in any and all assignments;
indeed, it is expected. But it must be an historically informed opinion. You should try to persuade the reader of your point of view through the clear use of
evidence and through argumentation that sifts and weighs the various sides of an issue as presented by the documents, historians, and/or lecture. The goal
is not so much to settle any historical controversy as it is for students to be able to clarify the stakes involved in a well-reasoned and informed manner.
Use quotations succinctly. You should draw on specific details from the readings in order to establish your points and elaborate your argument. BUT these
quotations should be pithy, brief, and to the point. NO BLOCK QUOTATIONS. A good guideline for use of evidence: at least one but no more than three direct
quotations to a primary source per paragraph.
Your paper should be typed in 12 pitch font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around and number approximately 750 words. Put your name on the
first page, near the title. A title page is not necessary. Please upload to D2L as a word.doc. I will be making comments directly into your text and returning it
to you via D2L, along with the grade.
