Using the annotated bibliography that you created for your first written assignment, write an
introduction section for your research proposal. In this introduction you will do the following:
• Explain your topic of study.
• From the four articles you found (and annotated) demonstrate that you have read about
research on your topic and can place it in the context of the existing literature (at least your
4 articles).
• Establish your specific interest in the topic (your specific topic) and say why it is important
to do a study on it. Do this without using personal experiences or anecdotes. However
important, this type of writing is not about one’s experience.
• Clearly write a hypothesis or research question that you intend to test/answer. You do not
have write a perfect question; you will continue improving on it for the next assignment.
• Follow the description in our textbook (Morling, 2017, p.46 of the 3rd Edition). Make sure
your introduction fits the description:
“Introduction: The introduction is the first section of regular text, and the first paragraphs
typically explain the topic of the study. The middle paragraphs lay out the background of the
research. What theory is being tested? What have past studies found? Why is the present study
important? Pay attention to the final paragraph, which states the specific research questions,
goals, or hypotheses for the current study.” (Morling, 2018, p.46)
Overall, your goal is to develop an “argument” indicating why the study that you are proposing
is worth doing. This argument needs to be based on evidence, which is provided by your
research articles.
IMPORTANT: If you have questions about what this paper should look like, please read the
introduction section of any or all of the articles that you collected for Assignment 1
Format: This paper should be written in APA style. This means that in-text citations should
follow the APA guidelines (e.g. Smith, 2014; Perez, 2016). The references section should be at
the end of the paper (and all of our written assignments) and should also be formatted in APA
style. Please look at the articles you found for specific formatting tips or click the links below.
The total paper should be about 2-3 pages double-spaced with one-inch margins, font size 12
(Times or Arial). A cover page and running headline are not needed at this time, but you can add
one if you want to start practicing on how to design them.
Grading: Grading will be based on the following criteria:
a. Was the topic clear? Did the author follow the structure by Morling (2017) (1 pt. if topic was
clear, .5 if not clear or confusing, 0 pts. if not clear)
b. Did the author demonstrate background knowledge by coherently incorporating the findings
of the studies selected for the first assignment?
(2 pts. if yes, 1 pts. if partial knowledge. 0 pts. if weak or incorrect use of citations)
c. Was there a clear hypothesis or research question at the end of the introduction? Is the
question/hypothesis testable?
(1 pt. if yes, .5 pts. If yes but unclear or not supported by the literature, 0 pts. If no)
d. Were in-text citations and references present and in APA format?
(1 pts. if yes, .5 pts. If yes but inconsistent or incorrect, 0 pts. If no)
