THE HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF MUSEUMS
MID SEMESTER REVISION EXERCISE QUESTIONS 2021
Notes on the mid semester revision exercise.
This exercise is intended as a synthesis/revision assessment task that asks you to present your understandings of some of the key issues and ideas that we have been discussing in the subject so far. In assessing this exercise, we will be looking for evidence of your ability to synthesize and articulate the key ideas and issues arising from the recorded lectures, readings and seminars conducted in this subject thus far. We will also be considering your ability to clarify and express your thoughts about the topics at hand and your ability to draw on these issues and ideas as the basis for expressing your own reasoned and informed conclusions/points of view about the topics under discussion.
This is not a research exercise and so does not require you to go beyond the readings/references contained in the subject guide when responding to the questions. (Although note, that some degree of comparison/referencing of museums and case studies besides those directly cited in the subject materials is fine, just so long as the examples/references cited are relevant and can be used to shed further light on the issue at hand.) Footnotes and bibliography are not required.
Answer all three of the questions below. Answers should be set out in extended, brief essay format. Each answer should be more or less around 700 words in length max (e.g. ca. 2 pages of text) to make up a total of ca. 2100 words max. Some variation between lengths of response is fine – e.g. if you feel one question needs a little more emphasis than the others – just so long as you make sure that you give due weight and consideration to each of the three questions in turn.

Questions
1. What is the difference between a museum and a gallery? What do the two words mean in relation to each other?
2. How were Kunst and Wunderkammers organised and displayed and what ideas did their owners attempt to convey through them?
3. Should the Parthenon Sculptures be returned to Greece or retained in the British Museum, London? Give reasons for your point of view.
