Portfolio Project: Global Nursing Shortage
(100 points – 20% of your final course grade)
Overview and Instructions:
You will write a paper that contains a minimum of 4 pages but no longer than 6 pages for this
course as its portfolio project. Your paper will address a topic of global nursing shortage, the topic
associated with global health and health disparities.
Nursing shortage in the United Stated is a problem that we all have been aware of for the
longest time. This problem is not isolated only in our country; it is a global phenomenon. As some of
you may have heard, there are nursing agencies who bring in international nurses to the U.S. to
alleviate the severity of nursing shortage. One may ask if it is ethically justifiable to do so, especially
when those foreign nurses are from the developing countries. From the same token, is it ethical for
the nurses to come to the U.S. or to some other developed countries, leaving their own countries in
a worse public health and a more severe nursing shortage? The answer to this question may vary,
depending on whom you ask. What about from the legal standpoints? Does hiring international
nurses to come work in the U.S. pose any legal issues/concerns to us, the nurses themselves, and/or
the nrsesǯ home contries?
This portfolio project gives you an opportunity to freely explore/learn of the issue from a
global perspective. Sources include published literature from peer-reviewed journals obtained from
the BSN library databases and acceptable internet sources (refer to the acceptable resources for
writing assignments posted in the course).

Review published literature that addresses the global nursing shortage to
provide a broad picture of the situation. The discussed elements of the situation
could be a combination of some or all of the following: causes, trends, impacts,
challenges, any relevant aspects found in the literature.

Discuss two (2) ethical/legal issues/concerns associated with the global nursing
shortage as stated in the literature (e.g., poplationǯs health issesǡ foreign nrse
recruitment, recruiting agencies, immigration restrictions) with an integration of
your personal views.

Provide one (1) recommendation that could help alleviate the global nursing
shortage and also possibly improve global health. This proposed
recommendation should be relevant to one or more of the issues or concerns you
have discussed in the previous section and it should be substantiated by
literature. Do not provide a recommendation without any cited source/s to
substantiate it.

Follow the instructions for the format of the paper (e.g., title page, margins, font
size, proper headings, and the number of pages) with good organization, logical
connections and flow, as well as correct grammar and spellings.

A minimum of two (2) references used for this project must be peer-reviewed journal articles.
That is, the sources you use may not be all from the website sources.
**Keep in mind that this paper concerns a global situation, not nationally or domestically (U.S.).
Therefore, write your paper accordingly.
Paper Format:
¾ Your paper must be in a format as recommended by APA in the Concise Guide to APA Style
(APA, 2020). Please review the Guidelines for Your Paper Format and Paper Example as well
as the Guidelines for a Title Page Setup for Your Project posted in the APA Resources Module.
These include, and are not limited to, the title page and its format, the type and size of font
to use, the width of the margins, levels of headings, number of paragraphs per page, double
spacing, indentations. An example of a paper provided in a course announcement should be
helpful in working on the format of your project.
¾ Your paper must be double-spaced throughout with appropriate headings for each section of
your paper. A paper with no headings is unacceptable. Please be sure you review the
guidelines indicated above. If you are unsure how to double space your paper properly, we
have a how-to link posted in the Other Resources Module.
¾ Your paper must be a minimum of 4 pages but not exceed 6 pages. The number of pages does
not include the title and reference pages. Follow the font size and margins in the Guidelines
for Your Paper Format posted in the APA Resources Module.

¾ Insert a page number to all pages, including the reference page. Begin your reference list on
a new page. Again, review and follow the aforementioned guidelines posted in the APA
Resources Module.
¾ Be mindful of the age of the sources you choose for this paper. They should not be way too
old (e.g., a decade old article). Make an effort to look for and use the most current literature
available. The more material you have found and reviewed, the more helpful it will be about
what to write and what the direction of your paper should be.
Paper Style:
¾ Write concisely. This paper is only 4-6 pages long. No abstract is needed for any paper in the
program (Per the Guidelines for Your Paper Format and Paper Example).
¾ Use correct grammar, spellings, and punctuation throughout the paper.
¾ General rule of thumb for all written assignments – Do not write in the first person (e.g., I,
me, we, our) but in their person unless you are specifically asked for your personal
viewpoints or opinions. See under the Other Resources Module for how to write in third
person.
Submission and Due Date – – Week 6: Sunday @ 11:59 pm.
¾ Any submissions past this date and time will not be accepted and a zero will be given as a
grade for this assignment.
¾ Review other relevant information regarding this portfolio project in the Course
Expectations as necessary.
¾ Submit your project in either a MS Word or a PDF t0 the Drop Box located within the
Portfolio project module.
Note:
¾ Students must be aware of the acceptable resources for academic work and follow the
correct APA format and style in all of their written work. Review the APA format & style
guidelinse in the APA Resources & Writing Guidelines Module and also consult the Concise
Guide to APA Style (7th ed.) as necessary. Review the Course Syllabus for all the
requirements for dropbox assignments as needed.
¾ Students must also be aware of plagiarism and what constitutes it. Review the information
on plagiarism posted on the course as necessary.
¾ Students are encouraged to use the BSN library website for literature searches for journal
articles. Review the RN-BSN Library and How to do Literature Search posted in Other Sources
module to learn how to do the search or call the library for further assistance.
¾ This portfolio project is one of the projects required to be included in your professional
ePortfolio in the capstone course (portfolio II). After the project has been graded, if students
receive feedback for revisions, they are to save the project with the feedback, revise the
project accordingly, and securely save the revised project for the capstone course (no
resubmission of the revised project is required in this course).
