Do states that allow citizens to carry guns have higher or lower crime rates?

Format:
· The page limit is 1-2 pages of text, not including the “Works Cited” pages.
· You will create an annotated bibliography and an outline in addition to the actual paper and “Works Cited”
page. Need by May 21, 2021
· All required materials must be completed in MLA format. (You will be given materials that explain what MLA
format consists of and an example to follow.)
· Your paper must include a minimum of 3 in-text citations.
· Your paper must have a strong introduction that includes a hook (attention getter) and your thesis statement.
· Your paper cannot have more than 5 short direct quotes (no more than one sentence) and 1 long direct quote
(3 to 5 lines).
· Your “Works Cited” must have a minimum of 3 academic sources formatted in proper MLA style. Every
source on your works cited page must be used in your paper.
· Your sources must come from a variety of places such as the SHS research databases, periodicals, books,
films, or the internet. These sources should be academic sources as discussed in class. Only TWO sources
will be allowed to be solely internet-based.
The Journey:
· You will begin by compiling an annotated bibliography of 3 sources that you plan to use in your paper. As
your research continues, you may find other sources that are better suited for your needs, or you may realize
that some of your 3 annotated sources are not what you need in regards to the direction your paper is taking.
However, by beginning with an annotated bibliography, you are sure to learn more about your research topic
and how your research can best be implemented in your paper to support your thesis statement.
· Good organization is the key to writing a strong research paper!! Sticky notes and paper clips are great items
to have when researching and organizing. Highlighters can be used to help you emphasize important source
information and to organize your paper. I strongly recommend printing out resources that you intend to use for
your paper and keeping them in your class binder so that you can keep all of your information in one place
that is easily accessible. You should also create a folder on your computer desktop and store the links and/or
the resources in there as well. This will keep you from losing that “really good source” that you thought you
had bookmarked.
· I will be grading several pieces of your research paper as you proceed through the writing process. An
annotated bibliography, an outline, and your research paper will all count as TEST grades for this six weeks. Iwill also grade the first two pages of your paper for a daily work grade. However, I will not be grading the
whole paper before the final copy is due, and you will not be able to redo a paper to get more credit.

general research questions and MLA formatting questions. Additionally, there will be several resources in your
Schoology folders.
Reminders:
· Research papers are always written from the 3rd person point of view. That means your paper should NOT
have any I, me, us, or we pronouns (1st person). It should also NOT have the pronouns you or your.
· Keep your research sources organized because they are the key to writing a good paper. Having great ideas,
quotes, summaries, and paraphrases to work into the paper will especially benefit the final product.
· The final day that the paper is due is a deadline. Absences do not extend the deadline for the final product,
so plan carefully.
· Revision is crucial and is much more effective if done with paper and pen than on computers. Remember
that revision is different from editing!!!!

○ Since Monday, May 31st, is a school holiday, everyone will be required to submit their first two pages and
“Works Cited” to Schoology on Tuesday, June 1st, whether I have you in class or not. All papers are due by
4:00 pm.
○ The reason for everyone turning in their papers then is so that you will have time to make corrections on
your final paper before submitting it. That being said, you should not wait on receiving your first two papers
before continuing on with your research paper. Corrections can easily be made on the computer, and by
waiting you are severely limiting the time you will have to write the remaining pages.June 4 – Research Paper (Test Grade)
June 7 (Mon Classes) / June 8 (Tues Classes) – Research Paper Presentations (Final Exam).
○ Students who are exempt from Finals will be exempt from the Presentation portion.
